Feds: Crooked TSA Screeners Arrested in Drug Trafficking Scheme
ABC NewsBy JASON RYAN and LEE FERRAN | ABC News – 2 hrs 19 mins ago

Multiple airport screeners have been arrested for allegedly taking handsome bribes to look the other way while loads of illegal drugs slipped through security at Los Angeles International Airport, federal officials announced today.

Two current and two former officials at the Transportation Security Administration were arrested in the last 48 hours in connection with at least five incidents from February 2011 to July 2011 in which on duty screeners took payments of up to $2,400 to allow suitcases filled with drugs to pass unimpeded through X-ray machines at LAX, U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr.'s office said in a statement.

According to Birotte's office, the scheme was uncovered after a member of the alleged conspiracy accidentally went through the wrong security line and was busted by TSA screeners who were not in on the plot. In another case, a TSA screener unknowingly arranged with a confidential source for the Drug Enforcement Administration to receive $1,200 for a shipment of methamphetamine to pass through security.

Follow BrianRoss on Twitter

The current TSA employees, 23-year-old John Whitfield and 25-year-old Capeline McKinney, and the former screeners, 30-year-old Naral Richardson and 27-year-old Joy White, are all expected to be arraigned in Los Angeles today. If convicted, each could potentially face life in prison, Birotte's office said. The plot also allegedly involved a couple of known drug runners.

"Airport screeners act as a vital checkpoint for homeland security, and air travelers should believe in the fundamental integrity of security systems at our nation's airports," Birotte said. "The allegations in this case describe a significant breakdown of the screening system through the conduct of individuals who placed greed above the nation's security needs."

A spokesperson for the TSA did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this report, but Randy Parsons, the TSA Federal Security Director at LAX, said in the statement from Birotte's office the TSA "has assured the investigating agencies we will do everything we can to assist in their investigation."

"While the arrests are a disappointment, TSA is committed to holding our employees to the highest standards," he said.

The Domestic Nuclear Detection Office works to enhance the nuclear detection efforts of federal, state, territorial, tribal, and local governments, and the private sector and to ensure a coordinated response to such threats.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) protects the nation's transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is one of the Department of Homeland Security’s largest and most complex components, with a priority mission of keeping terrorists and their weapons out of the U.S. It also has a responsibility for securing and facilitating trade and travel while enforcing hundreds of U.S. regulations, including immigration and drug laws.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) secures America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to our customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of our immigration system.

Sometimes our liberty slips away silently, and it is almost hard to notice what went wrong and where. The one fortunate thing about the TSA is that they certainly don’t fit that definition.

The American people shouldn’t be subjected to harassment, groping, and other public humiliation simply to board an airplane. As you may have heard, I have some personal experience with this, and I’ve vowed to lead the charge to fight back.

Please read the email below from my friend Matt Hawes at Campaign for Liberty. Campaign for Liberty is leading the fight to pressure Congress to act now and restore our liberty. It’s time to END the TSA and get the government’s hands back to only stealing our wallets instead of groping toddlers and grandmothers.

I hope you will join Campaign for Liberty in this fight.

In Liberty,

Senator Rand Paul

Nice. Good win for everyone forced to deal with the idiocracy of the tsa everytime we fly. Personally, I always opt out of the new scanner, as I have no idea what that thing does. I will go through the old fashioned pat down anyday just for the spite factor of making those morons do some work.

I love the lines that I get from them when I opt out, about how the, achine is perfectly safe and im paranoid for not wanting to use it. They tell me that I get more radiation by talking on my cell phone. Which may be true, but I refuse to believe someone with sweaty armpits, 4 inch long acrylic nails and food stains on their shirt.

Not doing OCONUS TDY anymore and nearly zero CONUS, I simply choose not to fly commercially. One of their little "freeze" programming drills, or wanting to handle my over-priced coffee, would be likely to get something different than their expected response. And then it would be different music in the background, I'd miss my flight, the lounge would get entertained..."You STOLE QP Pete's cheese!" at the top of my lungs... yadayada.

They are quite capable of denigrating the public's desire to fly at all to the point that it would almost seem like a scripted attempt to break the airline transport industry. Another agency that should be completely disbanded; fold the flag, thanks for the rights violations & comic relief. My personal assessment is that the slight unemployment spike is completely acceptable.

The whole agency demands a Siamese-twin smiley: face palm w/ROFLMAO.

I had better be quite about that one or some genius will try and implement it.

Man with strange watch arrested at Calif. airport, charged with having bomb-making materials

"A Southern California man was arrested at Oakland International Airport after security officers found him wearing an unusual watch they said could be used to make a timing device for a bomb, authorities said Friday.

Geoffrey McGann, 49, of Rancho Palos Verdes was taken into custody Thursday night after he tried to pass through airport security with an ornate watch that had switches, wires and fuses, according to Sgt. J.D. Nelson, a spokesman for the Alameda County Sheriff's Department.

A bomb squad arrived within five minutes and determined there were no explosive materials in the watch, Nelson said. The checkpoint was closed while officers secured the area.

McGann was taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin where he was charged with possessing materials to make an explosive device, sheriff's officials said. He was still in custody Friday night and could not be reached for comment..............."

My experience with TSA has been a mixed bag.

Sometimes, they appear to be working very hard and under a lot duress. Other times, they appear to be hassling parents who are already dealing with screaming/upset babies. I have also dealt with TSA agents who appear to be going for the Guinness Book of Records for least number of passengers they allow in an hour.

In this case, it looks like the person with the strange watch was asking for it (check out pic of actual watch in link below. Scary!). Especially combined with the t-shirt with built in tourniquet shoes that were too big with homemade cavities in them.

I guess if I were a TSA agent (and have not shot myself), I would have yanked this guy for a cavity search... : )

TSA agent accidentally pepper sprays fellow agents

An incident that reportedly led a TSA agent to accidentally shoot five fellow employees with pepper spray left Kennedy International Airport with mud in its eye.

According to the New York Post, the stinging substance that is meant to be aimed at the face, and can cause major eye irritation, sent all six airport security screeners to the hospital.

The Post reports: The agent, Chris Yves Dabel, discovered the device at the Terminal 2 security checkpoint and tried to determine if it was real, a source told The Post.

He told Port Authority cops that he “found the canister on the floor and thought it was a laser pointer.”

“They were playing around with it,” said one Kennedy Airport official.

The incident sounds more like something from "The Three Stooges" than something security experts would do.

The TSA seemed to assert in a statement to ABC News that the agent was being professional, not playful. “Officers were examining an abandoned item to determine its contents and to move it out of harm’s way when it accidentally discharged.” The TSA added that no travelers were injured.

The embarrassing incident led to the shutdown of security check points for 15 minutes, the UPI reports.

This is not the first time the TSA has suffered a security snafu. An earlier report in the New York Post exposed Newark Liberty Airport for failing to catch a fake bomb as part of a training exercise. An undercover agent brought the mock explosives through two layers of security, hidden in his pants.

Didn't know which thread would fit.
This was the most recent TSA thread.

Today a couple of TSA agents showed up at the UPS sort center here in Page.
It's a small building, no management, and typically has 5 drivers there for a few hours each morning loading their package cars from a trailer (the tractor driver drops a full one and immediately leaves with the previous day's empty).

They passed out business cards and told us that if we contact the police for any reason, we should also contact them.
Generally, the only reason we contact law enforcement is because we rolled up on someone else's MVA.

The business cards indicated they were out of the airport in Phoenix.

We don't even have a UPS airplane landing in Page.
The air packages land in Flagstaff and are brought here by truck.

It was strange...

Not quite half the work is done in the Navajo Nation, and the Navajo PD have jurisdiction there.
Doubt that any meddling would be received well.

Combine everything else with the TSA screening data bases long before you arrive at the airport, this is so over the top! They have the power to make judgements about someone because of a driving, financial, or other personal record mined from data bases.., and who are they again, their credentials, training, etc...? Seems to me someone has lost perspective big time.

DISASTER AVERTED: TSA agent bravely confiscates sockmonkey’s gun

http://bearingarms.com/disaster-averted-tsa-agent-bravely-confiscates-sockmonkeys-gun/

May said the TSA agent went through the bag, through the sewing supplies and found the two-inch long pistol.

“She said ‘this is a gun,’” said May. “I said no, it’s not a gun it’s a prop for my monkey.”

“She said ‘If I held it up to your neck, you wouldn’t know if it was real or not,’ and I said ‘really?’” said May.

The TSA agent told May she would have to confiscate the tiny gun and was supposed to call the police.

“I said well go ahead,” said May. “And I said really? You’re kidding me right, and she said no it looks like a gun.”

“She took my monkey’s gun,” said May, who has retained her sense of humor.
