I can't vouch for accuracy nor I am a fan of the source, but I do like maps. Does this tell us anything?

They don't use a lot of hand grenades, land mines or vehicle bombs (at the date of this maps making). they like to live in the hood and don't enjoy the countryside that much.
I'd like to see the same map but with monthly totals from the start to present. Maybe known Coalition troop locations for those months, relationship to mosques in the areas, etc. I don't know what I'm looking for but more info would jog the brain cells.
All this map really tells me is they're basically city boys that like to go home to dinner after a long day of terroizing the population.
The one area I was supposed to go into, in N.Iraq (Irbil) last month is relatively calm. :D :cool:
Some guys(older) are starting to put it together...

Which source? The Guardian, the NY Times or SOC-SMG? The last one, the one who compiled the data the newspapers used, is I understand a former Ranger-heavy outfit, but I don't know anything else about it.
But you say you like maps...

Some guys(older) are starting to put it together...
Irbil Governorate had a total of 4 attacks in the period in question. It looks like one up near Soran and the other three on the highway from Mosul to Kirkuk. It's a predominantly Kurdish region, so less of a flashpoint.

BTW, compare the size of the dots to the scale of the map in the NY Times version and the Guardian version. By using the same sized dots on a smaller map, the Guardian leaves the impression of a much larger fight.
I didn't see it in the Guardian graphic, but the breakdown is as follows:
Homemade bombs: 799 (34%)
Mortar and rocket fire: 664 (28%)
Small-arms fire: 527 (22%)
RPGs: 272 (11%)
Vehicle bombs: 40 (2%)
Hand grenades: 39 (2%)
Land mines: 27 (1%)

Been up in that region a few times. We actually "jocked down" to just concealed pistols, so that we would not offend the security they had in place.

For the hell of it, another map I threw together. This one breaks down activity by district (qadha) within the governorates. The new offensive launched today by the 24th MEU and Iraqi forces in Babil governorate to the south of Baghdad is in districts #33 (Mahmudiya) and #31 (al-Mada'in).
