Baloney! The enviro-fascists forced plastic bags on us in the '70s to save trees. Whatever bad effect it has is on their effing heads. To hell with them! I'm tired of these freaks getting a voice in my life. And they can screw those curly light bulbs up their asterisks, too.

How about people that reuse their purchase bags for garbage bags after getting home? Wont they now have to buy plastic bags to put garbage in... Oh wait, no loss of work for the plastics company or workers and no damn difference to the landfill. wew glad that is solved.
But we will all "feel" allot better seeing others carrying groceries in reusable bags.
Be interesting if the lawmakers would start their mission statements considering end state, second, and third order effects.
Random off topic thought: MRE bags should have one ziplock type end.

This common sense law will cause the cost of raw cotton & wool to sky rocket to product environmentally SAFE bags??
Or do we make the bags from IMPORTED Petro chemicals, which will cause the price of gas to go up???
About as stupid as using corn to make fake gas while the cost of taco's goes thru the roof..

I edited while you posted.
Most folks that reuse their store purchase bags for their garbage bags will now buy garbage bags.
End result, probably no change or minor change to the landfill.
We recycle here. One bin metal cans etc, One bin for paper, one bin for plastics, we use our store bags for garbage. I do not mind using my Alice pack to haul groceries, did in Germany for years from PX to Panzer housing.
What I mind is, the feel good legislation with little real effect to the landfill.

Unintended consequences.
I wonder if they realize people can just choose to shop elsewhere?
That could put a serious dent in their tax revenues.
My wife comes back from her Monday shopping trip with 25 bags or more in the minivan. Should she bring a ruck full of cloth sacks to the grocery?

Store plastic bags?
Just the right size for
1. Cleaning out the ashes in the Fire Place and grill.
2. Picking up dog waste in the back yard & cleaning the kitty box.
3. Lining the small trash containers in the office and bathrooms.
4. Taking to the garage to clean out the cars.
5. Good container for a fast pickup of the front yard and street - from the pigs who throw trash out their windows - tie it shut and throw it in the roll out as you come back to the house.
6. Wrapping paint brushes you're not quite done with.
And if the little bin under the sink gets too full the next one going to Food Lion stuffs the excess in one and drops them off at the recycle drop.

They are looking to Europe where they shop by the day and not by the week/month. Here I cannot see some of the big families that shop for the week using the totes that the Euros use nor the little cloth bags that I have seen at the Grocery store where my son shops in the DC area.
Agree, those that can, will simply slip out of the city limits and shop elsewhere. The land fill will still fill with plastic bags AND the idiots on the Council will still feel as if they have done something while sucking up to the idiots that call themselves "environmentalists".

Bio-degradable?
I've always wondered why they didn't make those little critters bio-degradable under UV light. Some places you can see dozens of those bags flapping on barbed wire fences.
Last winter I took one of those Sun Chip bags that were "bio-degradable" and stuck it in my garden in the fall to see how long it would take. Some pieces buried, some just on the ground and a couple stuck on stakes. Had to give up in the spring when it was planting time. None of the pieces looked any different.
Ok, I agree there are some difficulties instituting a program that requires people to plan and consider long term consequences; wrong forum. Also , I am somewhat surprised that a forum which prides itself on the ability to train up indigenous troops, cops out on domestic discipline in the home.:boohoo

I live in a fairly nice neighborhood but when I go for my morning walk I find numbers of beer bottles/cans, sports drink containers and whole boxes of fast food meals just chucked out windows.
Hey, the Good Idea Fairy just hit me. To solve the problem why don't we just ban all fast food and take outs. Want to eat? Shut off the gas hog, come inside and sit down - and don't dare ask for a doggie bag.

Penn this isn't about trash bags it's about advocating that the "government" should be given the authority to make "our" decisions/choices for us.

MOO, the environmentalists, urbanists, brown-fielders, smart builders, and other "socially conscious" groups could get a lot of more traction if they pursued campaigns centered around respectful persuasion rather than heavy-handed legislation. I think they'd rather get credit for being "right" than for getting things done.

How did Walmart let this pass? Aren't plastic bags part of their security measures as a form of proof that one checked out? (isn't that what a reciept if for?) Cashiers have a fit when I tell them I don't need a bag: "it's store policy"!

Like other military families, we do the majority of our grocery shopping at the commissary. At least twice a month we come home with over 15 bags of groceries...paperbags, that my wife then reuses in her classroom. If we switched to those "other" bags, I can see it easily taking 20 to 25. I also don't see any of the stores lowering their prices because now they don't have to buy plastic bags and pass the cost on to the consumer.

How soon we forget just how important the bagger was in the old days. Heavy hard stuff at the bottom of the bag, light swishy stuff on top. Could put lots of stuff in the old paper bags.
BUT THEY WERE MADE OUT OF TREES - THE LORAX WAS PISSED so they went to plastic to save the trees.
So now when you go to the store and get a full cart neatly stacked - after you go through check out its a great pile of floppy, tippy plastic stuff with stuff spilling out by the time you get to the car.
Sams & Aldi's don't use bags at all, stuff it back in the cart and wheel it to your ride.

Thanks, beat me to the answer. I hate the little plastic bags for the same reasons you listed.
And as far as Aldi's...if you return the cart you get your quarter back.
The bags are smaller however how many times have you seen only one or two items stuffed in the bag. Bagging used to be an art form and is still a competitive event in some areas. The whole issue is much ado about nothing. Is there nothing else of any major importance happening in this country, like the price of gas, unemployment, empty breast milk containers on planes etc. etc. ? Please govt. save us from ourselves. Go to the end of the link and read the comments, I get the impression from reading them that the folks down there think that there are bigger fish to be fried.

Easy, longrange, it makes them look like they're doing something while they're not fixing the economy. How is a city council of a metropolitan area that isn't among the top ten in population or top twenty in GDP going to fix the economy?
I would bet it has strong support among the residents of Austin. If it doesn't have sufficient support the citizens can have the rule rescinded.

This is not a question of whether we should use a garbage bag or not - the qiuestion is do we need someone to tell us whether or not to use a gabage bag inside the can, or can we decide for ourselves?

That's the main problem; home schooling will be abolished soon if the Progressives stay on a roll.
Austin takes great pride in sporting bumper stickers, t-shirts, and baseball caps which read "Keep Austin Weird" - it has been my experiences there that there are definite reasons for that.
Like Pete, I reuse and recycle those plastic shopping bags. Personally, I think Austin should ban Rick Perry and keep the bags - at least the bags can be useful.
Around here, local laws demand that anybody riding a bicycle (no matter the age) must wear a helmet...but it's optional if you're riding a morotcycle. I think that's kinda dumb, but it's what the community as a whole wants so I live with it. I kinda figure it's Austin's community and they're doing what they want, too. Go figure.

People got multiple uses out of both the old paper grocery bag that Pete reminisces of, and it carried more. It also burned up nicely, or deteriorated when discarded about a bazillion times faster than plastic crap.

I AM LOL; I was being sarcastic, not arrogant. This is not about the government and more bullshit rules; it is about eliminating a non-biodegradable material from the litter stream (pun intended). I would also like to see the non-use of Styrofoam cups, peanuts packing material and other NBG debris removed from the supply chained; but I cannot hold my exuberance back at the fantastic opportunity and example with regard recycling campaign material. Think about that, it would only require a name change on any particular item. Think Velcro-“Vote for Dick”! The great 1960 Presidential race, between Kennedy and Nixon. What could be more apropos in this political climate, then recycling Nixon hats, posters, banners to the Democratic same sex marriage campaign; is surly worthy of consideration; No?
