"Ray Schrump waited for his life to end when the Viet Cong officer knelt and put a pistol to his forehead.
Schrump had been shot while retrieving bodies after what he thought was the end of a firefight in South Vietnam. All day, he had lain in a field waiting for help, once waving to a helicopter that flew past. Soon he would be captured, suffering through torture and watching friends die during 1,711 days as a prisoner of war............."
