"Our only prerequisite to be supportive of an initiative is that it should be Afghan-led. It should be Afghan-owned. It should be Afghan-driven and Afghan-backed," Pakistan's Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said at the Afghan Foreign Ministry.
While she didn't mention the United States, Afghan officials have complained privately that the peace effort has so far been dominated by American efforts and talks with Taliban representatives. Washington insists it is only setting the stage, and any eventual talks must involve Karzai's government.

I just read a related article:
Report: NATO says Pakistan aiding Taliban

...
The BBC writes: "In a damning conclusion, the document says that in the last year there has been unprecedented interest, even from members of the Afghan government, in joining the Taliban cause. Afghan civilians frequently prefer Taliban governance over the Afghan government, usually as a result of government corruption."
...
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
OMG.. I feel like a teenager.. does anyone really think there is no agreement. Not like anything was done from 2001 till now.
Yes people in Afghanistan want to join "the Taliban cause." It is the one thing that is working or has worked.. so Afghan civilians will prefer a Taliban governance over the Afghan government, because it worked for years on it's own. While this current Afghan Goverment can't run itself with American dollars and military helping them!!

I was under the impression they wanted the taliban out...? I don't understand why anyone would want them back after the things they've done.
The Pakistani's are milking America with the huge amount of cash and military aid you are giving them. Without wanting to sound racist or anything of that nature (forgive me if I do sound as though I am), but they are doing exactly what the chinese would do in a situation like this..play both sides and get what they want..and then they tire of you or get what they want, they will be done with you.
India on the other hand, is an absolute mess politically, socially and as a democratic country...dealing with them or having them as an ally is also going to be like walking through a minefield.
Wish some common sense would set in and all that cash aid and equipment would stop because if they really (the pakistani) government really really wanted to kick the taliban out of the border towns and villages and back across into Afghanistan, they would have done so a long time ago..without american aid and equipment but with huge loses of manpower, assets and equipment...but they could get it done.
They just don't want to.
If I have offended anyone with my comments, I do apologize..

The Pakistani's prefer the Taliban due to their Pashtun ethnicity and also support for them increased back in 1997 when Indian and Russia began aiding the Northern Alliance. They know it very well India will stay out of A'stan if the Taliban is in power.
Yes I also agree that having us(India) as an ally of the US is like walking through a minefield because political parties want to come in power and for that they need support or what we here call as "votebank politics" becuase Muslims being the largest minority are an important asset as far as votes go,hence even though India and Israel being strong allies we voted in favor of Palestinian representation in the UN which ofcourse made the Muslims here very happy. So any move in support of the US will be pretty much made after analyzing how the Muslims will react.
I also agree on the part that is Pakistan truly wanted the Taliban out then they could have done it without US support. The problem is they don't want because they need them in power in A'stan.
What I have no idea about is what role the Chinese "the fair weather friends" of the Pakistani's will play in this matter.

It isn't a case of "who they prefer" but rather a question of faith and religion.
They (the people in Pakistan for the most part) view this as the next crusade and they are using everything under the sun to make it into a christian v muslim war...and that is what 99.9% of pakistanis you speak to will tell you.
There is no taliban..just martys and freedom fighters and warriors of allah...and for all their atrocities and the number of deaths they cause amongst even their own kind and faith, whatever they do, is in the name of god, first and formost...allah.
And, the second part would really be sharia v democracy...with them viewing (not necc. all pakistani's as far as this political/social ideology) sharia as the ultimate law above all laws..with any other laws created/introduced by non-believers as being against islam and against the word of allah.
And pakistanis, being pakistanis, will be extremely "sweet" to your face to get what they want but are nothing but back stabbing xxxxxxx's who will lie, cheat, and do anything under the sun to see an end to the foreign invasion and to get as much as they can for as long as the good times last (i.e. military hardware, equipment, training, money for rental of bases/facilities)...
If you haven't figured out what a screwed up country Pakistan is, and will always be, the state of their infrastructure, economy and unstable government since 1947 is a good indicator.
Not that India is any better but...you should note Pakistan will do anything China ask's because it has more to gain from being friends with China and to continue that friendship because China contributes in more ways economically to Pakistan's internal trade than the US ever will....
Side note: India. One sentence sums it up. ONE BIG BLOODY MESS.
Too much money changing hands..and too much self interest at heart. Besides, the chinese don't want any american forces anywhere near it's western borders to begin with. The real players behind the scenes as far as Pakistan and the US is concerned is actually China. They have far more influence than many care to think....
No matter what the US does, no matter how innocent it as a military power it may be even in small fire fights and so forth will always be on the losing side with the muslims, particularly in Pakistan/Afghanistan and Kashmir....it's the infidels vs god's army over there..or so they want everyone to think.
And it's a good fight and they believe they will eventually win, for all their sacrifice and losses. It's like talking to a kid who thinks Barry Bonds is innocent and is the greatest MLB player ever to grace MLB,,,,no matter how much you try to talk logic and common sense to the person, it simply does not register and can't register in their brain...their way is right..their thinking is right..and your's is wrong.
It's ideology, upbringing, "education/brainwashing" and tribal/religious.............
