I hear what Mr. Vanderleun is saying, but I think it's more of a case of being in the right place at the right time. President Obama got clobbered in a 2000 congressional election, didn't become a senator until 2004 and then became President in 2008. He had great financial backing, and stepped into a situation where the most vocal of the pupulace clamored for change. Basically, President Obama won because he preached the right message to the masses and had the backing to keep doing it until people bought it (right place, right time).
Voting President Obama out seemed like a foregone conclusion a year ago. However, the Republicans, in my opinion, focused so much on telling America how bad Obama was that they failed to present a viable (and consistent) alternative. I think that the Republicans have waited so long to back a clear frontrunner that it will be very difficult to present their candidate as a winning solution. Right now, they are more concerned with "bumper sticker solutions" ("No-bama", "Nope", etc) than with presenting a platform that others can get behind before the election later this year. If they continue with this, President Obama will be re-elected later this year rather easily.
In short, focus on building your own team rather than tearing down the other team. It's the best way to get people believing in your message.

Based on donations from Small/Individual Donors (http://www.opensecrets.org/pres12/index.php) it would appear Romney is out of touch with Main Street America. Main Street favorites like Paul, Bachman and Cain can attribute around 50% of their donations from Main Street America, whereas Romney can only attribute 10% from Small/Individual Donors.
Another chart (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/presenting-mitt-romneys-top-campaign-contributors) shows that the bulk of Romney's donations come from the who's, who in Bail Out recipients and Criminal banking.
According to Romney, Corporations are People. But their are a lot of people that don't see in the same light...
“Mitt Romney’s comment today that ‘corporations are people’ is one more indication that Romney and the Republicans on the campaign trail and in Washington have misplaced priorities,” she said in a statement, calling the comment a “shocking admission.”
And then there is Romney Care........
We're voting for another slickster, who smiles nice. And we're HOPING, maybe, just maybe he will be easier to deal with than the present man........but we won't really know until a few months after he takes office.
It is to the point that I must agree with the article. Of the two that I would have felt good about voting for, one is gone and the other probably will be shortly. What it will come down to is voting for anyone but Obama. IMO, if you do not vote, you are essentially voting FOR Obama.

Obama got elected for a few reasons IMO:
Concur...the name does not matter... "N.E. Buddybut" won the previous election.
Current trend is to run on what you are NOT as opposed to what you ARE.
Knife fighting through the primaries results in a partially bled-out champion by the time they really need to fight. The Dims need only sit back and let the party defeat itself.

Concur. Sad part is the Repubs have had 4 years to get ready, and they haven't. Almost like they've had a whole semester to get ready for the final, and haven't cracked a book til the night before the exam.

Whole post
You make very good points, most of which I could agree with.
In every case it all comes down to how it is perceived by the masses.
And considering the growing number of independent voters and declining number of those participating in the voting process, the growing perception is We The People are being gamed, the system is rigged and the candidates are little more than whores who's services are for sale to the highest bidder.
My cynical perception is Obama, Romney or whomever they are nothing more than Storm Chasers. They follow the devastation, promise the moon, come up short on delivery, the quality received in poor and the warranty is good as you can see the tail lights.

Could not agree more with this comment and bandycpa's follow on comment. We of the Grand Old Party have had four years to prepare for this and instead we look like a second rate reality show, about which Obama quipped to Jay Leno when asked which candidate was he concerned about, "I am going to wait until most of them are voted of of the island.". At this rate, he doesn't have to worry about packing any boxes any time soon.

They had the election on a silver platter but are wasting the opportunity with infighting and embarrassingly unprepared and out of touch candidates.
No ideas, no leadership, no hope.
