And to think that it was laying in only about twenty feet of water and not far from shore for all of those years. Makes one kind of wonder why someone didn't locate and salvage it sooner. Would like to see the Moniter next on the list of historic Civil War vesels.

It definitely took huge balls to get into that deathtrap and start cranking for the USS Housatonic.

The USS Monitor has already been rediscovered. Her turret, cannon, propeller, anchor, engine and some personal effects of the crew, have been raised, preserved, and are on display at the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia.
