When the White House decided to host an extravagant, Hollywood-created Halloween party in 2009 decorated by Tim Burton and featuring Johnny Depp in his "Mad Hatter" role from Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," the event was deliberately held on the down-low...........

Once again - Is it news if the MSM does not report it?

The MSM knew at the time and didn't report it.

The questions are 1. Why not then? 2. Why now?

It only came out in a book from a former NYT columnist. The media is jumping on this to stress-innoculate "the one". It'll be old news in a few days. Some silly pop-star bimbo will be strapped to a gurney spouting a fake british accent and the media will be all agog (like the word??) at her predicament and everyone will forget about this latest outrage.

January 08, 2012 Book: White House Hosted 'Wonderland'-Themed Hollywood Halloween Bash Before Burton Film Release

When the White House decided to host an extravagant, Hollywood-created Halloween party in 2009 decorated by Tim Burton and featuring Johnny Depp in his "Mad Hatter" role from Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," the event was deliberately held on the down-low..

interesting phraseology...

Down Low.

Origins

The term originated in the African American community, and was originally used to describe "any kind of slick, secretive behavior, including infidelity in heterosexual relationships."[2][7]

According to a study published in the Journal of Bisexuality: "The Down Low is a lifestyle predominately practiced by young, urban African American men who have sex with other men and women, yet do not identify as gay or bisexual."[8]

In this context, "being on the Down Low" is more than just men having sex with men in secret, or a variant of closeted homosexuality or bisexuality – it is a sexual identity that is, at least partly, defined by its "cult of masculinity" and its rejection of white culture (including white LGBT culture) and terms.[3][9][10][11]

A 2003 New York Times Magazine cover story on the Down Low phenomenon explains that the black community sees "homosexuality as a white man's perversion."[9]

It then goes on to describe the Down Low culture as follows: “Rejecting a gay culture they perceive as white and effeminate, many black men have settled on a new identity, with its own vocabulary and customs and its own name: Down Low.

There have always been men – black and white – who have had secret sexual lives with men. But the creation of an organized, underground subculture largely made up of black men who otherwise live straight lives is a phenomenon of the last decade... Most date or marry women and engage sexually with men they meet only in anonymous settings like bathhouses and parks or through the Internet. Many of these men are young and from the inner city, where they live in a hypermasculine thug culture.

Other DL men form romantic relationships with men and may even be peripheral participants in mainstream gay culture, all unknown to their colleagues and families.

Most DL men identify themselves not as gay or bisexual but first and foremost as black. To them, as to many blacks, that equates to being inherently masculine.[9] ”

but then,, it's only words...

"Apparently there's some sort of high-toned and fancy to-do up at the fort, eh? How could it be that upstanding gentlemen, such as yourselves, did not merit an invitation? "

Meh...how can anyone get upset over a little partying by the man who just last year alone killed all those Somali pirates, OBL, Anwar al-Awlaki, and Moammar Ghadaffi?

I'll bet Chris Kyle's publishers were sweating bullets thinking about the costs of reprinting all those book covers if BHO had kept it up and they had to change the title of Kyle's book to "America's 2nd Most Lethal Sniper"...

Whitehouse response
http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/01/09/gossip-wonderland

" This was an event for local school children from the Washington DC area and for hundreds of military families, and certainly nothing that the White House was ashamed of."

Linked in the White House story is this MSNBC story from 2009
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/33563158/ns/today-today_people/t/no-trick-obamas-dole-out-treats-kids/#.TwtzlKWPmeE

"Then they headed inside to the East Room, where the first couple attended a reception for military families and for the moms and dads who work at the White House, along with their kids.
Obama thanked the military members and their families. "We are so grateful to you," he said. "Especially now, a lot of the times, you guys are separated. It's tough. The spouses who are at home are serving just as much as folks who are deployed. So we are just so thrilled that you guys could be here.""

FWIW, the White House announced the cover up back in 2009. Source is here (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/briefing-white-house-press-secretary-robert-gibbs-103009).The White House

Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release
October 30, 2009
Briefing by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, 10/30/09
James S. Brady Press Briefing Room

12:47 P.M. EDT

MR. GIBBS: Good afternoon. We'll try to do this quickly so we can get to afternoon meetings with the Joint Chiefs. But let me start out with giving you guys a quick rundown of the week ahead.

On Saturday, tomorrow, the First Family will welcome more than 2,000 local area children from Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia schools, and their families for trick-or-treating at the North Portico for Halloween. In addition, the President and First Lady and the Vice President and Dr. Biden will host a Halloween reception for military families and children of White House and White House residence staff.

Q What are they coming as?

MR. GIBBS: All sorts of things.

Q What time is that, roughly?

MR. GIBBS: I think it's 7:00 tomorrow night.

Q Is the President going to dress up?

MR. GIBBS: I have not been told the First Family is going to dress up, but I will endeavor to check.

Q That's not a denial, then?

MR. GIBBS: No, it's not. It's not. (Laughter.)

Q Coverage on it? Pool?

MR. GIBBS: I don't know if there's pool or not, to be honest with you.

Q Just walk up to the front door, ring the bell and say, "trick or treat."

Q So we are not invited?

MR. GIBBS: You can't -- you're a little old for this I think; I'm just saying.

FWIW, the White House announced the cover up back in 2009................

This thread is about the MSM covering for the the party - after the announcement.

Can you find any MSM links to stories about the Mad Hatter, other famous people and their activities at the WH Party in the 90 hours or so after the announcement?

A person would think JD coming dressed as the Mad Hatter coming to the WH at the time would have big big entertainment news.

The answer to your question is no. While there were several contemporaneous reports of the first couple distributing candy and of the reception for families of members of the armed services, I have not found reports of the celebrities attending that reception.

But then, so what? In my neck of the woods, celebrities making appearances to promote their work is not a big deal, even when they end up rubbing shoulders with an incompetent president. That is, unless such interaction exacerbates traffic in the TMZ <<LINK (https://www.google.com/search?q=los+angeles+times+president+traffic&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a)>>.

Moreover, given previous criticisms heaped upon this president in regards to his interaction with members of the armed services, I think it is politically problematic to ridicule him when he does something to honor them. If the White House had played up this story, what would have been our reaction? (FWIW, comments posted on Breitbart.com in 2009 (http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9BMDG8O0&show_article=1&catnum=0) give an indication.)

In regards to the media not covering the event to satisfaction of the president's critics, does the lack of reporting reflect a deliberate "cover up," a lack of due diligence, editorial bias, or the fourth estate extending the same professional courtesies that it has offered to previous occupants of the White House? (How many times did Bush the Younger visit the families of veterans and wounded warriors during his administration?)

MOO, there are bigger--and more important--fish to fry than a kiss-and-tell book discussing a Halloween party at the White House as we head towards the general election. IMO, making hay about this event and the MSM's alleged non-coverage works to the advantage of the current administration <<LINK (http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/01/09/gossip-wonderland)>> and deflects attention from those issues that might gain traction among the president's supporters. (For example, his use of signing statements.)

YMMV.

QP Pete--

The answer to your question is no. ........

So the short answer was NO

The point being that as far as I can tell just about every shindig they've thrown has been at least talked about in the entertainment section on TV, the papers, the news. Some made a splash, some bombed, some a one liner and fotgotten then there were some were kicked around forums for days.

Just odd that there was nothing from the MSM about this party - until now.
