Because weight can be such an issue we are reintroducing some historic gear made with modern materials. In Horace Kepharts " Camping and Woodcraft" there were a few items commonly used that have for the most part been forgotten . The browse bag were typically bed ticking ( mattress casing) that they took and stuffed with indigenous material for a sleeping pad, keeping them insulated from the cold ground and providing padding to sit or sleep on.
This is not for every environment and the leave no trace philosophy is important especially for tactical use.
Here are some images of two different bags we have been working on. The large G1 Browse Bag weighs 2oz. empty the smaller bag weighs less than an ounce empty, doubles as a panel marker and weighs 8oz filled with 3 layers of Clima Shield Combat insulation wrapped with a space blanket for thermal reflection, it is like a heating pad (Shown folded in half and rolled). The third image shows the big bag filled with oak leaves and a G1 Liner ( system weight 26oz.....30f rating more with layering clothing ).
