A little help? (http://sassvets.homestead.com/VFWProject.html)

Shake out your old boots and pockets.

If somebody can help with a poc for anyone in Korea or SE Asia that would be great also.

Update 12/30 progress pics. Base completed. Medals will be glassed in. Dirt will be added last.:lifter

I have a pair of "actually worn in combat jungle boots" if you want them for the display. They are pretty new and only worn for maybe two mission or so.
I have a better pair that was issued in RVN but never went outside the wire. :D

Both are too small for me now. Size 11s.

Any contributions from the European/North African Theater will be great. My address is on the webpage. I only need small amounts as it will all be mixed together.
I see to it that a thank you letter from our post commander is sent to anyone who contributes to the project.

Got boots and the helmet. We're working on getting a replica rifle now.

PS
Those boots , like any Nam militaria, can fetch you a tasty bit of cash on Ebay.
Just sayin' ;)

Roger that Sir. I wont be on base before nest Tuesday but I'll make sure I have the package ready by then. There are a couple of WWII German pillboxes in an (now) orange grove located less than 2 miles from NAS 1 base, along SS192. I'll pick the dirt from there. Unfortunately the deadline for deliveries before Christmas has expired, but you'll sure have a package from Sicily ASAP.

No rush. I'm looking at this as a good winter project that will pass the time on frigid days. I really appreciate the effort.

Ok. I'll also try and fix the GPS coordinates so, if it pleases you, you can google them onto a map and use the photo feature to have a glance at where I grabbed it from .

Last time I travelled, unsterilized dirt was on the prohibited list of agricultural products.

How about "Mineral Samples" for further Scientific Analysis?!?!

Utah Bob
12-11-2011, 12:06
How about "Mineral Samples" for further Scientific Analysis?!?!

Probably not worth the risk of getting on some DOA bureaucrat's shit list.
I can probably buy mineral samples from the areas commercially. I'll look into that.

Not as cool as soldier supplied stuff but....

Hold on. I could try and send it via Italian postal service and label the package as gift/part of combat veterans' memorial altar

Utah Bob
12-12-2011, 07:35
I dunno. It would still have to get through US Customs. I'm going to try to contact DOA and get an opinion.
If all else fails I suppose I can buy some mineral samples that have been cleared and imported.

Unfortunately we never had any troops deploy to South Africa. My wife would like some diamonds.

Get a plastic jar and a bag of marbles. Fill jar with marbles and pour in dirt, Tie a ribbon around it and put a Merry Christmas sticker on it. Ship it as "Christmas gift-Marbles".

If the issue is 'non-sterilized' dirt, why not sterilize? 2 minutes in the microwave seems to the consensus with google-fu. Is there some certification necessary or would self- attestation be enough?
Just a thought.

s
12-12-2011, 19:34
I highly doubt that it all comes down to nuking it for a quick minute in a microwave.

Yeah. It needs to be "certified" by DOA.

And microwaving won't kill everything. I tried to kill ants on my ;last glazed donut once by putting it in the microwave.
Ruint the donut and the ants were still mobile and hostile.

The ones I really need are the remaining blue states. (http://sassvets.homestead.com/vfwproject.html)The other ones are either in the mail or waiting for the snow to melt or rain to drain in their AOs I guess.

Are you looking for dirt from every single state? If so, I noticed you don't have Texas yet and I'll be there towards the end of this month. I can pick some dirt up and bring it back to CO, just let me know how much you'd like and any other details. Hope I can be of service.
