Hundreds of Iranian protesters on Tuesday stormed the British embassy and a UK residential compound in Tehran, burning the Union Jack and reportedly briefly taking hostages, in an escalation of tensions between the two countries over Iran’s nuclear programme.
The UK government advised nationals in Iran to “stay indoors, keep a low profile and await further advice” after the attack on the embassy, which came a day after Iran downgraded its diplomatic relations with Britain in response to fresh UK sanctions aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
