WASHINGTON — The U.S. Army Special Forces is marking the 50th anniversary of its symbol and nickname — the Green Beret — by reminding Americans who they are and what they do.
After the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden, even the commander in chief called the SEALs Special Forces. But that name is reserved for actual Green Berets.
The rest are special operations forces.
President John F. Kennedy authorized the beret for troops with a special mission to counter communism by fighting alongside rebels trying to overthrow anti-American regimes.
Even in the Pentagon, many don’t realize that’s their specialty and have suggested regular troops can do just as well fighting alongside Iraqis and Afghans.
Green Berets point out they have years more training in language, culture and combat.
