I wonder...DARPA has had its "grand challenge" of using robotic vehicles for some time. Google is doing the same for civilian vehicles on city streets. Could it be a sort of test track for simple wheeled vehicles that were machine controlled?

The terrain isn't all smooth. In fact, the Google link in the article lets one zoom in and see that the lines aren't typical roads. Rather, they seem to be just a color difference from the other soil.
