California Mayor Snubs Veterans to Attend Occupy Rally

The mayor of Richmond, Calif., is under fire for her decision to skip a Veterans Day memorial to attend an Occupy Rally.

Mayor Gayle McLaughlin sent an email to the San Jose Mercury News explaining why she would not be attending a Veterans Day salute that included a re-enactment of the launch of a World War II-era ship at the Richmond shipyards.

“I choose to honor our veterans, not only on Veteran’s Day, but daily, but supporting an end to military warfare to prevent further fighting and dying in needless wars,” she wrote. “I am a strong supporter of Veterans for Peace and Iraq Vets Against the War.”

The mayor said that since the city is not sponsoring the Veterans Day salute, she chose to attend an Occupy rally – an event that she has been actively promoting.

More about Gayle McLaughlin here (http://www.mayorgayle.net/about.htm).Gayle was born in Chicago, Illinois, into a working class union family. She is the middle child of five daughters. Her father was a carpenter and member of the Carpenter's Union and her mother was a factory worker and housewife. As a young activist during the 1980's, Gayle worked with the Central American solidarity movement, People United to Save Humanity (PUSH), and the Rainbow Coalition. Gayle is married to Paul Kilkenny, also a Richmond activist for social and environmental justice.

By contrast the Sixth Annual Northeast Los Angeles Veterans’ Day Parade, held in Eagle Rock, California, is in its final stages. The local L.A. City councilman, participated. As I'm a Luddite, I did not have a digital camera handy for photos. However, the demographics of the participants and well-wishers provided food for thought.

That state has been going to hell in a handbasket for along time. What we are seeing is the fruition of a liberal agenda.

NOT ferment, sour like vinegar! :munchin

Walked though Haight Ashbury in uniform with a few members of my unit in 67. It was eye opening just to see the idiocy they called life. We were not liked and were told in no uncertain terms that we were to leave.

I asked what happened to the free country I lived in and was told not there.

What a waste of oxygen that whole area had. The left coast needs to man up or drop off into the ocean. I can't believe that the majority of Left Coasters are idiots. :munchin

Such actions always carry a certain amount of political risk for those making that choice.

Others view it in a somewhat different light.

Veterans Day: I May Not Have The Right Bumper Sticker, But I'm Still Patriotic

http://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/Opinion/2011/1111/Veterans-Day-I-may-not-have-the-right-bumper-sticker-but-I-m-still-patriotic

I do agree with this statement as it reminds me of my Dad and his brother, and what they taught my brothers and I.

This was a man who taught me that patriotism was not so easy as flying a flag on a certain day, but rather was a profound, deep commitment that absorbed your whole being and propelled you to service.

Here's an interesting 10 question quiz.
