We could soon use lasers to sniff out roadside bombs

"..........The detection method uses what's known as a single-beam coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering technique. Translation? A laser beam like the one pictured up top combines short and long pulses of light to identify individual molecules with a high degree of precision from a safe distance............."

Interesting........

Pretty slick. I hope it saves lives and limbs.

From 100 yards?

Maybe they can find a way to detonate them too.

Could we use the same technology to detect the placement of IED when they are first planted? See the fools with picks, shovels, etc., long before we roll down the road.

Why wait before there in?

Why wait before there in?That would require even more people leaving the confines of the base.....:munchin

Stay safe.

Yeah, forget following the supply line of the enemies weapons, food, ammo, resources, money, etc., let's monitor the use of simple digging tools.

I wonder if the directed microwave systems used for crowd control (i.e. ADS) could be adapted for this purpose, maybe combining microwave and EMP to disrupt and destroy the IED electrical components or heating it to detonation, similar to the technology used by Vigilant Eagle, but in a much smaller package...

Roughly 250,000 square miles.

That is a lot of space and people to watch, with entirely inadequate ISR assets.
