From my #1 SIL, this is a slight twist on a Dave Ramsey article..

http://www.daveramsey.com/article/federal-budget-vs-household-budget-how-do-they-compare/lifeandmoney_budgeting/

Government Debt 101

This puts the ignoring of the real problem into perspectives that everyone should be able to understand.

If the US Government were a family, they would be making $58,000 a year. That family is spending $75,000 a year and already has $327,000 in credit card debt.

Now the family is proposing BIG spending cuts to reduce their spending, taking it down to $72,000 a year and not paying down any of the credit card debt. And the family is not receiving any pay raises to bump up the income.

These are the actual proportions of the federal budget and debt, reduced to a level that we can understand since we are all numb to billions and trillions

Now does everyone grasp the trouble we are in?
