View Full Version : College football 2011
We are fast approaching opening weekend (September 3) with potentially great games scheduled early in the season - below are two early marquee matchups.
• LSU v. Oregon
• Georgia v. Boise State
College football is such a great distraction.
:lifter
The Broncos are not my team but they sure are fun to watch - Bulldog fans may disagree.
We moved up here in 06 and it has been a blast to watch them (it's really the only game in town). I had forgotten how much more enjoyable college football was, and is again.
We'll see how BSU does in the MWC this year, but any way you look at it, it's going to be fun!
Go ' Caines!
Yeah, if you believe the press, it seems that the 'Canes may have been conducting pre-season training camp at Tootsies Cabaret and the training table may have included hookers and blow.
But this thread is about college football and not the pros.
Sorry Zonie. :D

The best thing about "The U" - and the main reason I decided to attend - is where it's located. That's one of the worst things for the football team.
I almost decided to go to U of Florida, due the the "Gator Raiders" in their ROTC program, but then looked at a map.:p
Poor Al Golden.:boohoo
At any rate, she said "Caines" - not Canes... so I thought she was talking about some dental school's team!:D

I feel your pain...I come from a Trojan (USC) family so I know what it's like to have "issues" with the athletic department! Another family member attended SMU and they had their trouble too. But it's looking like this Shapiro guy was about as bad as they come. But hey.... at least it the NCAA won't kill the program~ hopefully! :D

Dear NCAA - if you’re reading this - you don’t have the balls to give the ‘Canes the death penalty.

My apologies to JoePa for that cheap-shot. He's still alive...? :D
I don't have an answer to your question, but having the 'most wins' wouldn't be part of the criteria. Hanging around piling up 'W's' long after Coordinators and position coaches have become accountable for gameplanning and recruiting... I don't think that adds to one's 'greatness'.
I'm partial to guys like LaVell Edwards. Coaches that do more w/less. His BYU teams consistently gave bigger/stronger/faster opponents from major conferences fits. Jim Harbaugh did the same thing recently at Stanford.
Best football coaches of all-time? IMO, the two Bill's: Belichick and Walsh.

Now give me your definition of "alive" He's still roaming the sidelines (most of the times, in-between hospital stays), if that's what you're asking.
The reason I asked is because it's a subjective term and sadly college football uses wins as the definition of success. Kind of like how most Americans equate money with success. We could split this conversation off into one of a million sub-sections: Greatest Coach Based on Numbers Alone (regardless of how he got them), Coach Who Did the Most With Least, Coach Who Had the Greatest Impact on a Program ...
I have a respect for coaches such as Paterno, Frank Beamer, John Gagliardi and Chris Ault, who are able to remain with a program for as long as they have in a "win now or else" atmosphere. Not all have been successful their entire career (win-wise), but they've obviously done something right to stick around.

Well I am from Pennsylvania but my family is not. Father from Tuscumbia, grew up going all over the south. A lot of relatives all over the south, primarily Alabama and Georgia. Grew up on the Tide.
I don't think just being at the same school for 100 years constitutes being the greatest football coach. FYI Alabama has 13 national championships (some contested), Penn State has 2.
Penn state was led to the championship by Joe Pa but the Bear led the Tide to 6 national championships in 25 years.
Joe Paterno hardly even does any coaching he is just a figurehead they keep walking up and down the sidelines. Sometimes they even use him as a tackling dummy :p
Besides my loyalty to the Tide I went to college at Pitt. You won't find me rooting for blue and white.

During the 1999 season, hundreds in the U of Arizona student population sent viruses to my work email after I wrote an unfavorable pre-season article on why Arizona was over-rated. They were going into the Pigskin Classic against Penn State, and both were ranked in the Top 5 by a majority of the preseason polls.
Heisman Trophy nominee Trung Canidate looked like he wanted to punch me during the post-game interview when I asked about his performance.
U of A fans are so sensitive. :p

I remember that game well... started a decade long downward spiral, althoughthe 1998 season was more of a fluke than anything. I watched the Rose Bowl dreams slip away in the span of three series to UCLA... at Arizona Stadium... though beating Nebraska helped with some of that pain. Arizona always plays poorly once they find themselves in the top 25.

If I remember correctly, Arizona had five guys who were all-conference in 1998 and they finished in the Top 5. For a program who wasn't regularly used to that type of success, and losing that much talent, a letdown was inevitable. Their #3 pre-season ranking in '99 was their highest ever.
The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.

I should have know the second half was going to go badly when five of the Golden Knights got stalled and couldn't get into the stadium. I had my fingers crossed they could find a safe landing in the parking lot.
The Tigers dropped it in the last 20 seconds.
Little Dude is writing a sternly worded letter to the Athletic Director. "No one uses a zone pass defense when there is 35 seconds left to play and everyone knows its pass or lose. They should have been man to man."
