The head of the Congressional Black Caucus told Fox News on Wednesday that members are "furious" about the incendiary email Rep. Allen West sent to the Democratic party chairwoman, saying he's going to speak with the Florida Republican about the matter.
"It's unfortunate," Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., said. He could not say whether the CBC would seek to discipline its only Republican member, but claimed lawmakers were upset the incident has brought "undue attention" to the caucus.
West fired off an email Tuesday to Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, calling her "vile, despicable and cowardly" for calling into question his stance on Medicare on the House floor.
The CBC was planning to discuss the email at its weekly meeting Wednesday, but votes got in the way and the caucus now plans to discuss the issue at a later date.
In the meantime, Cleaver said, "I'm going to talk to him."
Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., another member of the CBC, said he was "shocked" to see the language West had employed.
"We have really got to make sure that we maintain a high level of civility," he said.
Elsewhere, House Democrats' campaign arm quickly seized on the exchange, blasting out a fundraising pitch Wednesday asking donors to help them raise $100,000 toward defeating West next fall.
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Rep. Steve Israel called his email "disgraceful" and "hate-filled," urging supporters to make sure Republicans "don't forget this moment."
West, though, stood by the email.
"I think it's important to stake my ground," West told Fox News. "It was about enough is enough, and it's my right to say that. She is the one elevating this."
In her remarks on the House floor, Wasserman Schultz had said: "The gentleman from Florida, who represents thousands of Medicare beneficiaries, as do I, is supportive of this plan that would increase costs for Medicare beneficiaries. Unbelievable from a member from south Florida."
She was alluding to a GOP-backed bill to reduce the debt and amend the Constitution to require a balanced federal budget. The House later approved the bill 234-190, but it is unlikely to pass the Democratic Senate.
West, who is in his first term, wasn't shy about his online outburst. He sent his email to numerous lawmakers, as well as Wasserman Schultz and other congressional leaders. The subject line of the email: "Unprofessional and Inappropriate Sophomoric Behavior from Wasserman Schultz."
The e-mail said: "Look, Debbie, I understand that after I departed the House floor you directed your floor speech comments directly towards me. Let me make myself perfectly clear, you want a personal fight, I am happy to oblige. You are the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up."
West also wrote that Wasserman Schultz has proven "that you are not a Lady" and "shall not be afforded due respect from me!" He said he was alerting House leaders to her "heinous characterless behavior."
A spokesman for Wasserman Schultz, Jonathan Beeton, said in an email of his own: "I don't think that Congressman West is upset at the congresswoman, but rather with the fact that she highlighted that he and other Republicans are once again trying to balance the budget on the backs of seniors, children and the middle class. ... The truth hurts."
West's office did not back off the criticism after the email was widely distributed. A spokeswoman said Wasserman Schultz had taken "another cowardly cheap shot at Congressman West."
West told Fox News that Wasserman Schultz's comments were part of a "pattern" of "hate," and he felt that she "disrespected" him in her House floor speech.
"You don't need to call me out on your time to speak on the floor," West said. "Focus on what is your plan for the debt ceiling."
House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., whom West copied on his email, defended the tea party-backed freshman.
“Tensions are building here sure," McCarthy told Fox News. "Allen is going to defend himself. There’s always a way to display that differently.”

It's really too bad that this board doesn't have a bullshit flag emoticon as those two lines are clearly deserving. The CBC is a sad joke. It's ok for any one of it's members to be as uncivil as they like as long as the recipient is from the other party.

This fella is "shocked" pretty easy.
Although his statement "You are the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the US House of Representatives" is somewhat inaccurate in my opinion. I would give that title to Barney Frank.

I like this guy a lot, but he and Cain need to pull their heads out and pay attention to established rules of decorum. You can say the same thing a different way. Next thing you know, people will be literally pissing on each other on the House floor. :rolleyes:

I'm confused as to why the Congressional Black Caucus is up in arms. This wasn't racial thing till they jumped into it, merely two politicians from FL.

Hence the caning of Senator Sumner and why it would be inappropriate for Representative West to engage W-S. In point of fact - a significant percentage of the membership would not qualify as "worthy opponents".
A pity the voters have such a poor record WRT "taking out the trash".

This is the Old State House at Markham and Center in Little Rock. It was the seat of the state government from 1836 to 1911, when the present capitol building was completed. The Clintons and the Gores watched the 1992 election returns here and Mr. Clinton gave his victory speech from the front porch.
During Arkansas' very first legislative session back in December of 1837, the distinguished Speaker of the House stabbed another Assembly member to death with a bowie knife. As knife fights go, this was probably one of the better documented, what with it being witnessed by a couple dozen state congressmen, many of whom might have been sober.
There was a bill on the floor to offer bounties for the killing of timber wolves. Major J. J. Anthony, the representative from Randolph County, said that instead of being issued by a "magistrate," the bounties should be handled by the "President of the Real Estate Bank." The Speaker of the House, Colonel John Wilson by name and President of the Real Estate Bank by profession asked from the podium whether or not Major Anthony meant that as an insult. Anthony snidely replied, "I believe there should be more dignity attatched to the office of one who recieves oaths in the state of Arkansas. Strike out 'magistrate,' and write in, say, 'President of the Real Estate Bank.'"
Truth told, I don't quite get the joke myself. But Anthony's disdain of the Real Estate Bank was well known; and even if Major Anthony was not smart enough to deliver Colonel Wilson a proper insult, tone of voice counted for a lot then as it does today. And when one of the other members broke the silence by laughing out loud, Colonel Wilson decided it was time to defend his honor by killing Major Anthony.
He jumped down from the podium and drew his nine-inch bowie knife. Major Anthony drew his own. A twelve-incher. (It says something about the importance of Bowie Knives that newspaper reporters were more concerned with the details of the knives than who-said-what.) Anthony had longer arms, too. He was a very tall man while Colonel Wilson was five-eight or so. So as Wilson approached, Anthony stabbed at him twice, the second blow landing in Wilson's left forearm.
The shorter man's strategy would have required him to fight from close enough to eliminate the disadvantage of reach. Anthony would have moved back after stabbing Wilson in order to prevent Wilson from closing. Wilson wasn't stopped by the gushing knife wound in his guard arm. Anthony then threw his knife at Colonel Wilson. Wilson ducked and the knife imbedded in the rostrum.
What could he have been thinking? Everybody knows you don't throw your only knife. It's a low-percentage tactic. A panic move. A rookie mistake. Maybe he was disarming himself, hoping that Wilson could then end the fight in a way that would preserve everybody's honor.
If that's what he thought, he was wrong. Wilson charged. Anthony threw one chair at Wilson and then grabbed another and tried to fend off Wilson's blows. A colleague tried to break up the fight, but was brushed aside. Wilson ducked under the chair and brought the knife up into Anthony's chest from below. Both men collapsed, but Wilson had enough strength to withdraw his knife from Major Anthony's body and wipe it clean on his victim's coat before passing out. The whole fight couldn't have lasted more than twenty seconds.
Major Anthony died. Colonel Wilson survived. Wilson's trial was moved to a neighboring county on the grounds that tempers in Little Rock were high over the incident and the accused could not get a fair trial. While on trial Wilson lodged at the same house as the Judge and picked up the tab for his honor's meals. He also hired a mob to raise a ruckus outside the courtroom whenever the prosecuting attorney started to talk. Colonel Wilson was found guilty of excusable homicide, whereupon he stood up right there in court and invited the jury and anybody else who happened to be in the courtroom to adjourn to a "dram shop," where Wilson paid for drinks until the following morning. He kept his freedom but lost his seat in the Assembly. His replacement as Speaker was Grandison Royston, the man who had tried to break up the fight.

While Weaver inveighed against Democratic monetary policy, Sparks and several others tried to shout him down, and someone was heard to call Weaver a liar. Sparks apologized for getting exercised but said he wasn't the one who called Weaver a liar. Weaver accepted the apology, then issued a warning. Here's how The Times described the scene in its December 22 editions:
'' 'I would not harm a hair of your head [Weaver said]; but don't make any mistake about me. My fighting weight is 185 pounds, and my address is Bloomfield, Iowa.'
"This increased the general merriment and increased Mr. Sparks's anger. Shaking his fist at Mr. Weaver, he shouted: 'I have a contempt for that man's arm. It can't be used to hurt me. The manner in which he received my explanation shows that he is not a gentleman, a fact of which his conduct in the Presidential campaign has given abundant proof.'
"At this point, for the first time during the long controversy, Mr. Weaver lost his temper, and replied to Mr. Sparks by saying: 'In the presence of the House of Representatives I denounce you as a liar.'
" '... And I denounce you as an unmitigated scoundrel,' rejoined the irate Sparks."
Weaver and Sparks rushed at each other but were restrained from fisticuffs as dozens of members rushed toward the Speaker's desk.

I don't care if it's the Greasers vs. the Jets, bats chains and knives. At the end I want my Government spending less and paying the bills down. They can take some Senatorial and Congressional wage and benefits cuts too, for having done so little with so much whilst stealing power they were never meant to have in this Republic.
