View Full Version : Shocking-Scammers on Craiglist. My personal experience

I’ve started looking for a decent, but inexpensive camper. I was on Craigslist June 18th and saw a listing posted June 6 for a 2005 32 foot bunkhouse camper trailer 3 hours drive away for sale for $3,800 that blue-books for $10,000-$12,000.

It seemed too good to be true, but sometimes distress sales happen, and being new to the camper shopping game, I figured I would check into it, and build some experience.

Step one was to see if the weight would be low enough to tow the trailer with my Suburban, so I sent an email:

Ma’am,

Is your travel trailer still for sale?

If so, could you tell me its weight?

I go about my business, and later in the day get a reply.

Hello and sorry for delay,
Thank you for your interest in purchasing my 2006 Dutchmen 31K-DSL Travel Trailer, which is still for sale and it is as good as it looks. I have decided to sell it for $3,800 and the buyer will receive it with all papers and receipts that he needs to register it, so if you will buy the Rv you won't have to worry about the paperwork. Also you will have 5 days to inspect and test after you receive it. It was my father's but unfortunately he can't use it anymore as he died 3 month ago. I moved back where I was born in Sangerville, ME and now it will be shipped from here.
Please get back to me only if you are serious and want to buy it.The camper was NEVER smoked in and no pets.
Thank you
Mary C. Layman

Some photos with my Rv :[ Link removed by me]

You’ll notice that nowhere in the response is my question about the weight answered, and in the span of less than 12 days, the trailer has moved from Wisconsin all the way to Maine. A recently deceased relative is thrown in for sympathy as well. The email account being used has changed also. The language leads me suspecting the writer isn’t a native English speaker.

I jokingly tell my family I am debating whether or not I should hurry up and just send a check made out to cash. I would be waiting a long time for my trailer to show up, I think.

I had some time on my hands, so I decided to mess with her a little bit:

I am so sorry for your loss, Mary.

Where do you want the check sent?

God is smiling on me! I’m going to be driving out to Portland, ME in three weeks for a work thing. Instead of driving my car, I could drive my friend’s truck instead. Could I just pick the camper up? That way I could check the camper out, and also save you the shipping cost!! I can also save money by not needing hotels on the way back!!

The next day I headed off to Boy Scout Summer Camp with my Scouts. I had downtime during the day, and my smartphone at hand. I eagerly awaited Mary’s next reply. I was not disappointed:

Hi XXXXXXX,

My Dutchmen 31K-DSL travel trailer is now located in Sangerville, ME as I told you from my first email but my brother in law will use his discount to help me with shipping so I have to pay a small amount for it. He has a business with sewing machines and is using the shipping company since 4 years ago. The total amount that you will have to pay for it will be $3,800.
The inspection period will be set to 5 days and I think is enough for you to make a decision about the camper travel trailer. I also want to inform you that I have two other offers for it at this moment so please let me know your decision as soon as possible to know what to do. One of them is waiting for a loan and will get in touch with me tomorrow if he can buy it or not and the other one have only $3,500 to buy it.
Regards.

She (assuming it is a she) clearly doesn’t want me coming to pick up the camper, which no doubt exists only in his/her imagination. She’s very clear about the amount of money she wants, too.

The amount is enough for a decent little score, but not enough that any law enforcement agency is going to put any effort into investigating it.

She is trying to ass-rape me, so I ad-lib an anal theme into my subsequent replies. I figured I would make her read something graphic and unpleasant as long as I am wasting her time. I have plenty of time on my hands and have the need for something to do while at camp anyway, so I send this response. All the other adult leaders were enjoying this as much as I was. Typing on a smartphone is a laborious process however.……

I can't pass up this camper. I want it!! Don't sell it to anyone else. I can pay full price and don't need a loan..

I am getting my friends truck and leaving tonight.

I’ll be in Sangerville the day after tomorrow. Where should I meet you to see the trailer and pay you?

Also, is a personal check ok for payment? We can call my bank when we meet so you will know I have the money in my account.

This is such a blessing from the Good Lord!! I am having rectal surgery in California soon and will need to stop frequently and rest from sitting as my wife, Bertha May, drives me home.

Do you believe in Jesus, Mary? I am pretty sure you do since you seem so kind and are helping me get the trailer of my dreams...

With the camper, Bertha May can drive and I can ride in the camper with my backside up in the air and not bleed onto the upholstery of our car.

I am hoping Bertha May can come along and meet you when I get the trailer. I think she will like you as you seem like a nice lady.
Where should we meet, Mary?

And again, I am not disappointed by a prompt response from my good friend Mary:

Hi XXXXXXXXX,

My price is firm $3,800 even you come to pick it up even you want it shipped. I think is more then fair that you pay $3,800 as shipping is my responsibility and allso I want to tell you that we will use eBay in this transaction in order for both of us to be 100% protected and insured by them. They are responsible for the security of this transaction and you have nothing to be worried about, this transaction is legit and all your funds are fully insured by their company.
You will have a period of 5 days for inspection as I told you in my first email. The inspection period start from the moment when the camper trailer is delivered at your address. I think 5 days is enough for you to make a decision if you keep the Dutchmen Trailer or not. If you won’t like my Rv. then you notify eBay and send it back on my cost. Also they are guaranteeing purchases up to $ 50.000, which is great, I really love eBay!
If you are still interested in buying the Rv, I can give you the link to my eBay auction page. It’s a "Buy it Now" auction so you won’t have to bid. (With no further obligation or fees).
Regards.

I don’t understand the ebay portion of this scheme, but it is all crap anyway, so I just roll with it.
I have the time to kill. I decide to throw a 419 scam at her.

For the record, I never would have given my paypal info, and even if I had, I never would have taken the money even if the scammer had been stupid enough to send it to me.

I continue with an unpleasant theme just to try to make the person on the other end hopefully get at least a little grossed out while wasting their time with me:

OK Mary. I.checked on ebay and they do provide a guarantee so everyone is protected.
Unfortunately, I withdrew the money but it was stolen from me when I was in the changing room at the clinic where I get my iced coffee enemas to treat my colon condition which causes me great painful spasms and oily discharge, as well as very loose and watery stools.

Have you ever had an iced coffee enema, Mary? You should try one sometime if you haven't. They are heavenly and relax your colon, which brings on a blissful state of peace, at least until you find out your money has been stolen....

I can still get the money, but I need to pay a $475.00 redemption fee to cash in some bonds, and I have no cash now.

If you send me the $475.00 to my paypal account I can cash in the bonds and send you your $3800.00 plus the $475.00.

The important thing is that it is all guaranteed through paypal so we are safe.

A good christian lady like you deserves some benefit for helping me out, so I will pay you an extra $200 for helping me with this.

Send me your ebay page and I can send you my paypal account to send the $475.00 to, Mary.

I am praying hard for your help. I need to go get my colon cleansed again now to overcome my sadness about the dastardly theft of my money. What is this world coming to when honest people like us are victimized by thieves, Mary?

I am glad we have established such a good bond of trust. I feel such a close bond to you that Bertha May is getting a little jealous....

I get no response to this, so I decided to send one more email. I wonder if the person on the other end was shocked that I was trying to scam the scammer. I don’t understand why she doesn’t just send me a piddly $475 so she can take me for $4000…….LOL

Mary,
I need you to send me the $475.00 right away so I can cash in the bonds to pay you.

You also haven't sent me the ebay link yet.

What's going on, Mary? Do we still have a deal going here? I am so excited about the trailer I have been constipated for three days, not an easy feat when one gets a daily chilled buttermilk colon rinse, I assure you!

We have something special between us, a bond of two honest people who share a link of mutual faith. I am so excited about getting to meet you- I feel your kindness and warmth so strongly from your emails (please don't tell Bertha May that, though.)

I really want to buy the camper, Mary.

Please let me know what is happening...

My last message bounced back as the email account had been closed.

Mary Layman, wherever you are, I still want the trailer….

Mary Layman, wherever you are, I still want the trailer….

Hilarious, R!

When I was looking for a new place there was a little scam going on regarding a house for rent. I got the spidey senses going and didn't email back after the first response. Just didn't have the energy to go back and forth with the person who was probably sitting in some dump in Nigeria or some other hellhole. :D
