MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. (AP) — Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery says a man trying to break into a home near Mountain Home was shot and critically wounded by the homeowner.
Montgomery says Larry Copas was shot in the head and the abdomen by Jeremy Ealey early Monday.
Montgomery says it appears Copas first tried to break into the bedroom of Ealey's 4-year-old daughter, then tried to break through a rear door of the home when Ealey fired through the door. The sheriff says Copas then stuck his hand through a broken window of the door and Ealey fired two more shots — hitting Copas.
Copas is now hospitalized in critical condition.
Montgomery says Ealey has been found to have been justified in opening fire and that the prosecutor is considering charges against Copas.
