I had dinner with some friends from NY/NJ who are raving about New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. From articles, interviews, and youtube clips of him taking on the unions, he comes across as a "Jersey Guy" , very eloquent, but a confrontational in your face, straight shooter. IMHO, a very interesting Republican prospect.

Any thoughts or opinions on Christie?

Outstanding. May he run and win.

I like what I have seen of him, especially his take it or leave it attitude with the press. He seems well informed on many issues and doesn't hide or downplay his opinions. I would like to see him in a few debates with Romney and Obama.

Last week (sadly) Christie stated he aboslutely will not run for Preisdent in 2011. He is doing a great job trying to rehab NJ after years of fiscal insanity, corruption and abuse of public office.

Hey, one step at a time. IF he fixes that....he'll have a great record.

Something most politicos don't have..

I live in Jersey, have met him a few times, the first time was at a tea party event in Morristown prior to the election. I like him, like you guys have said, a straight shooter. I have friends who are teachers, police officers, and state employees who HATE him. New Jersey is a mess, if he can fix it, even alittle, I like him. Not sure if he can make it work for the rest of the country though.

He'd have hell trying to make it worse.

Like bk1133 said;
Union sloths are sucking the life out of Jersey, and Christie is fighting to balance the books by cutting the mafioso fat.
Ergo, he is not loved by the teacher's unions, and the like..

One of the last things I did for the state of NJ before heading for the doors was to vote for Christie. Ultimately he'll be a one term governor because the people of NJ don't really want their problems fixed. The Democrats overwhelmingly control the State Legislature and they have shown no desire to fundamentally transform the way business in done in that state. His real legacy will be his Supreme Court nominations which will have a last impact long after his time as governor has come to an end. I don't know if he would make a good Presidential candidate but I do know he would abuse the President like a red headed step child in a debate.

My only exposure to him was watching a chunk of the recent Piers Morgan interview. Liked him a ton based on that.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is reconsidering his decision not to enter the 2012 presidential race — and he says he will let top Republican donors know within days about his plans, Newsmax has learned.

Well, the top hits on Christie seem to be: The 2nd Amendment, didn't join the 26 states that challenged Obamacare, and he was the only governing Republican to attended the dinner honoring Hu Tsingtao (oops, that's beer) Jintao. Then again, he may be attracted to free food regardless of the honoree. ;)

He sure looks like it. They might have to put the William Howard Taft bathtub back into the WH if he is elected POTUS. I still say he looks like an extra from "The Sopranos"! The dude's connected... which may not be a bad thing!:D

It's a safe bet there won't be any photos of Christie on a bike wearing a bitch helmet.

Only thing I didn't like about him was how he answered that woman regarding sending his children to private school. IMO, it was a legitimate quesiton that he could have answered more eloquently.

It wasn't a legitimate question IMHO. The Christies live in one of the nicest suburbs in NJ with a great school system. This wasn't a case of a politician sending his kids to private school to avoid a shitty public school while talking out of both sides of his mouth.

For those of you who don't know there was a NJ State Supreme Court case that is commonly referred to as the Abbott case. A couple of decades ago a bunch of the poorest school districts in the state sued the state over "unequal" funding. An activist court sided with the schools and instead of demanding the legislature address the issue the court ruled that the state was obligated to fund the Abbott districts at the same rate as the best districts in the state. My old town spent $14,000 a year per student while the Abbott districts were north of $22,000.

NJ ranks second in the amount spent per child in education only behind NY. The lady who asked the question was a teacher who knew all of that and was looking to score one of those gotcha moments by trying to make Chrisite look like he was kicking the public school kids while making sure his own were taken care of. It's bull. If anything NJ has proven over the past two decades that you can throw endless resources at bad school districts and achieve the same result if you had spent half as much.

Christie should have responded then by saying essentially what you said. A lot of people don't know about the above, so when put on the spot, a politician needs to take that into account when responding to a question or else they will give people a wrong impression who don't know any better.

For example, he could've said something like "Nice try, but you're being very selective in your facts here..."

IIRC that question was asked on a local cable channel. Everyone that watches that channel understands what's going on with local school funding. It's impossible to pay the obscene property taxes they collect without being aware of the issue.

I have listened to Christie speak over the years and he is who he is. I'd take his honest in your face style over these mealy mouthed losers that tell you what you want to hear and then do what they want to do when they get into office. Christie told the people of NJ what he was going to do if he got elected and then followed through on all of it. The only people who are crying are those who's sacred cow got slaughtered or those who thought he was like all politicians and wouldn't follow through on what he said. I think the country is long overdue for some adult leadership. Lord knows we need it if we have any shot at avoiding financial ruin.

I was very impressed last year during the school budget fights in NJ. Christie put his foot down, stuck to his message, and when the voting was finished, he won hands down. Most of my family is from Jersey, so I was able to hear many different opinions on the matter, most in favor of Christie's view considering they all pay property taxes for these bloated school districts. I found it very interesting that NJ voters actually get to vote on individual school budgets. I wish we had that here in NY.

That's partially true. You do get to vote on the school budget. If it gets voted down it goes to the town where the town can elect to fund it at a reduced rate or they can elect to fund it as is. School boards have gotten smart. If they want $10 million next year they will ask for $15 knowing the vote will fail and then they lobby behind closed doors to get the $10 million they wanted all along. Sometimes even more. School budgets are the primary reason why property taxes are insane in that state.

I moved from NJ to Pa a year ago. I left a 1500 square foot townhouse for a 3200 square foot house on a 1/2 an acre of land in a better school district and my property taxes went from $8200 a year to $4300. NJ is fundamentally broken. The poor areas control the votes and they use the wealthy areas to fund their stupidity. Whatever happens to Christie he is the only elected official in that state that has tried to do the right thing for the taxpayers during the 10 years I lived there.

I don't always agree with him but all too often he was the only adult person in the room. Looking at the current President and the crop of GOP candidates he's the only one I really believe would tackle the issues head on and he would do so in a meaningful way. The rest would start their re-elcetion campaigns they day after they took their oath of office and then spend the next four years making sure to avoid making any decision that might not be popular.

IMHO, this answer while fine isn't consistent with the message Christie puts out.

He stands out as someone who is bright, tough, and a straight shooter. The anti-politician if you like. The bulk of his appeal, no pun intended, in part is he isn't going to filter his answers to appeal to voters. The lady asked a question he thought was too personal regarding his kids, he blasted her, like many a parent would. In a PC world, of "misquotings, being misunderstood, and beer summits" his intellect, eloquence and blunt candor makes him a formidable politician.

Fair point, there is no Republican saviour as folks mentioned, if he runs, IMO he has the best chance of beating Zero of all the Republican possiblities.

Can't see myself wasting my vote on anyone who is anti-gun, or has taken the reins of an anti-gun state without making 2A rights a priority (Romney, Christie, etc.).

No use changing your stance for the sake of your campaign -- I know if you mean and do what you say (or not).

There's not a chance in hell that NJ would change its gun laws whether Christie wanted to or not. Admittedly, I'm not familiar with his statements on gun rights, but I'm willing to bet he's much more friendly that Obama is, that's for sure.

Not so long ago in the scheme of things you could carry a gun/weapon just about anywhere you wanted. Heck when I was growing up people had rifles in the back of their truck windows when they drove to school and parked in the school parking lot.

Hmmmmm, I wonder how we got to where we are now?

Oh yea, it's a result of people in power with a mindset like the "Skinny guy" posted above. :(

Still do. In fact, most people around here expect it, and I for one, would not want to live in a town where HS kids could not.
