Arizona, Obama, 9th Curcuit Judge and La Raza

PHOENIX (AP) — A federal judge in Phoenix is set to formally take a seat on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

A ceremony is set for Judge Mary Murguia on Friday at the federal courthouse in Phoenix. Among those attending will be U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Murguia was nominated to the appeals court by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate in December. She was sworn in in January but has been finishing up her cases in U.S. District Court and hasn’t formally taken her seat.

Murguia became the first Latina to serve on the federal bench in Arizona in 2000. She was previously a federal prosecutor in Arizona and a county prosecutor in her native Kansas.

Nothing changes with this. The 9th Circuit has always been the most liberal, and most overturned, circuit court in the nation. She will simply maintain the status quo for that district.
