Normalgirl you are correct however I don't think that's what he means a VA pension. The answer is YES... Lets say your retirement pay is $3,000 per month. However you are rated at 50% disabled... So you will recieve $1500 RETIREMENT pay and $1500 DISABILTY pay. But, The DISABILTY pay is tax free. Feel free to IM me

This does not compute..

The retirement pay penalty is no longer valid,, If you have 20yrs and 50% you get 4500 @ month..

The deduction of VA benies was done away with by GWBush and adjusted 10%yearly until the 100% mark was reached.I recieve my full retirement amt and my full VA disability monthly.

Combat Related Special Compensation was enacted. In 2008 it was amended to allow those medically retired with less then 20 to receive both military pay and VA disability with no offset.

Well I stand corrected then, I retired in 2006 and I know I was denied CRSC however I have a 60% SC disability. Re-filing paper now. Thanks and sorry for the misleading info.

Have you changed your CDRP to CRSC?

That is quite a bit lower.

I qualify for both but my reg disability is a higher dollar figure than the combat related deal. Either one is handled in the same manner, no deduction.
Yearly the VA sends me a letter asking which I choose to elect and when the reg dis went higher (due to the 10% yearly phase in) than the combat related I changed over.

Unfortunately those of us at only 40% don't see any of that. With this compensation formula just try and get updated to that 50% mark. It's easier to get from 50% to 100% than it is to get from 40% to 50%.

One other little thing; the percentage is not the percentage of your retirement pay. It is a percentage of the allowed amount which can range to just over $3000 monthly dependent on family members. Rank/Time in Service have no bearing on the amount you receive.

A person with 50% disability, spouse, and two kids will get $936.00 per month regardless of retiring as an E-6 with 20 years or an 0-6 with 30.

CSM PRB, I have to disagree. IF and only if the numbers are the same. The CRSC would be the better deal because it is tax free and CRDP is Taxable. If your CRSC related issues were rated lower as in not all of your SC issues were considered "combat related" then the CRDP might be the better deal. Knowing a little of your background, wish I could of gotten ahold of you earlier...I'm getting compensated very well. CSM-H

You do not have to be 50% to file for and recieve CRSC, only the CRDP kicks in at 50% and is done by DFAS. CRSC you have to file for, if your issues are considered "combat related" and there are four definitions for "combat related" you cab recueve CRSC....take the time to look up the information on the CRSC website.
Also to the guy that stated it is easier to get to 50% than 100% he is absolutely correct! You can and should revisit your rated issues as you get older and they get worse. You can ask for an increase in compensation, also if you have issues that were rated at "zero" you can ask for an increase in those as long as you have evidence showing a continuation of medical care since rated...not as hard as it sounds but does take time. Good luck to all, CSM-H

This 6 page VA access document was assembled by Snaquebite some time ago. It is the most complete list of source material and references for VA Claims and Department numbers I know of; he did a remarkable job assembling this list for us.

To All,

The information below was passed on to me and I thought it important enough to pass on to everyone else.

Below are web-sites that provide information on Veterans benefits and how to file/ask for them. Accordingly, there are many sites that explain how to obtain books, military/medical records, information and how to appeal a denied claim with the VA. Please pass this information on to every Veteran you know. Nearly 100% of this information is free and available for all veterans, the only catch is: you have to ask for it, because they won't tell you about a specific benefit unless you ask for it. You need to know what questions to ask so the right doors open for you -- and then be ready to have an advocate who is willing to work with and for you, stay in the process, and press for your rights and your best interests..
