E.coli cucumber scare: Germany seeks source of outbreak

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13592765

"Germans have been warned not to eat cucumbers until tests identify the source of a deadly E.coli outbreak that has killed 11 and spread across Europe.

It is thought contaminated cucumbers were imported from Spain, but further tests are being carried out.

Germany has registered 1,200 confirmed or suspected cases in the E.coli outbreak so far........................"

This outbreak so far seems to be from cucumbers and they think organic farms. My wife calls me a Raccoon sometimes because I wash everything that comes from the store and has a skin we eat or put in a drink - like cucumbers, limes or lemons.

Would E Coli be limited to the outside?

Washing and/or peeling anything with a skin is a safer practice for any fruits/vegetables you don't plan to cook.

Things with rinds/peels (melons/citrus, etc.) typically are GTG.

We share this advice with our most severely immunocompromised bone marrow transplant patients and have them avoid soft, skinless fruits such as berries for a period of time after transplant due to concerns for E. coli (and other bacteria) and mold/fungus.
