WASHINGTON — House Assistant Democratic Leader Jim Clyburn, the highest-ranking African-American in Congress, on Wednesday blamed most of President Barack Obama's political problems on racism.
Clyburn, who's from South Carolina and is a close ally of the president, offered his views in response to a question about Obama's re-election prospects next year.
"I think they're improving every day," Clyburn said. "I think the president has been a good president, a great commander in chief."
Clyburn, who met his wife at a 1960 court hearing after spending a night in jail for having engaged in a civil rights protest in Orangeburg, S.C., then brought up Obama's race as the first black president.
"You know, I'm 70 years old," he said. "And I can tell you; people don't like to deal with it, but the fact of the matter is, the president's problems are in large measure because of the color of his skin."
Clyburn noted that he himself got hate mail, racist phone calls and offensive faxes on a regular basis. Asked how that relates to the president, Clyburn retorted: "We have the same skin color; that's how it relates to him."
Clyburn described a recent racist image of Obama that received widespread news coverage.
"When he sees his face being put on a chimpanzee's body; do you think he didn't see that?" Clyburn said. "And I suspect they send the same faxes to his office they send to mine."
Marilyn Davenport, a member of the Orange County Republican Central Committee in California, forwarded an email to friends last month that displayed a photograph of a chimpanzee with Obama's face superimposed on its head.
In response to the immediate uproar, Davenport apologized but rebuffed demands from the California NAACP that she resign her GOP post.
Clyburn suggested that the "birther" movement of Americans who say Obama wasn't born in the United States is fueled by racism.
"I don't know why anybody didn't ask for John McCain's" birth certificate, Clyburn said. "He wasn't even born in this country."
The Republican senator from Arizona, whom Obama defeated in the 2008 presidential election, was born at the Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone, where his father served as an officer who'd later become an admiral and commander of the U.S. Pacific Command.
White House spokesman Adam Abrams declined to comment on Clyburn's remarks.
Clyburn said he agreed with the president's decision last month to release his long-form birth certificate from Hawaii. Obama responded in part to challenges from Donald Trump as the real estate tycoon eyed a presidential bid.
Clyburn has a close relationship with the president, who at 49 is young enough to be his son. The No. 3 House Democrat speaks regularly with Valerie Jarrett, a senior presidential adviser, and several former Clyburn aides hold senior White House posts.
Despite Obama's evident desire not to focus on his historic status, his race has intruded periodically on his candidacy and his presidency.
In a March 2008 address in Philadelphia, Obama, who was then a senator from Illinois, explained his relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, his former pastor, who'd made incendiary statements about the United States.
Obama, born to a white Kansas mother and a black Kenyan father, said he no more could disown Wright than disown his white grandmother, who he noted had "once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street."
In July 2009, after six months in office, the president shared beers in the Rose Garden with Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., an African-American, and white Cambridge, Mass., police Sgt. James Crowley.
Obama invited Gates and Crowley to the White House to douse a controversy he'd ignited by saying Cambridge police had "acted stupidly" in arresting the professor and sparking his charges of racial profiling.
Clyburn sparred with Bill Clinton in 2008 after the former president compared Obama's victory over Hillary Clinton in South Carolina's Democratic primary with the Rev. Jesse Jackson's wins in the same contests in 1984 and 1988.

Personally I thought it was funny. Racism works both ways and if EVERYONE would just let the past be the past we'd ALL be better off.
Being black is not why the majority of people don't like him. Being a piss poor President is the reason. Sure there are still racist people out there and quite honestly I feel sorry for them. That's an easy one. African American has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with it and anyone who thinks it has in my opinion has their own stereotype/racism problems. I see the president as a MAN. He just happens to be black which is of no consequence in my book.
As I said It's a joke just like me being a Redneck, Cracker, Honky. I can laugh at myself. I'm a human and it doesn't matter what skin I or anyone else was born with. I have a sense of humor. When people quit taking jokes seriously we'll all be MUCH better off. With me everything is pretty much black and white (pun intended) you're either a good person or you're not and I don't give a damn what color your skin is.
Just so you know i raised my kids the same way. Hell I had more black kids stay at my house than white kids. One of those kids just dropped off roses for my wife last mothers day and thanked her for always being there and giving him good advise while he was growing up. Great kid by the way.

But the D's tactics does not allow for that. They play to win - even if that is planting a false story in the press right before an election - or primary.
Check out CO and the R primary. A false story allowed the weaker R to advance where he was smashed in the election. Only in the last few days did it come out that the story about the R plagerizing was false and his version of the story was right.
So Yeah, getting down in the mud and wrestling with a pig will get you muddy but it sure feels good on a hot day.

With respect, I disagree. We're not going to break a popular perception of American politics being the choice between the lesser of two evils if we continue to allow debate to be framed by windbags on both sides of the aisle. If we allow tactics to trump strategy, we are doomed as a nation.

The constant uproar over namecalling and "slurs" is part of the pussification of America. How about people grow a pair and stop crying when someone calls you a bad word? I was taught to punch anyone who called me a name I didn't like, not to cry to the authorities that my feelings have been hurt.

I can partially agree with that statement but as a whole IMOA I don't think it holds water.
Me being white or (not black) has nothing to do with it. Unfortunately there will always be some form of racism in the world. Racism however works both ways. There are places in America where it's white against black, black against white, Hispanic against black, etc etc. So many times for example have I heard as a white person "White MF this, and White MF that". Now let a white person do the same and most people freak out. Now in my book there is no difference and this too is racism.
Not every black person lives with racism every day of their lives. Now if you ask Jesse Jackson for example they do as he perpetuates that idea to further is popularity/pad his pockets. Without racism he has no job.
I have friends of many different races that are doing just fine and you know what, they can laugh at themselves, their race, and other races just like me.
We have a good customer that comes in the store every week who has the perfect outlook on life. No one determines his destiny, he jokes about blacks, whites, etc and gets along wit absolutely everyone. I forgot to mention that he's black by the way.
Now we have another fellow who comes in that if you aren't white he doesn't even crack a smile but let another black person come in the door and he's smiling from ear to ear treating them like another human being. We treat him just like any other customer and once in a great while get a smile out of him. We're determined to turn his sour attitude around as we treat everyone that comes in our store as an equal.
Now we have another gentleman that's 90 years old that comes in who is racist. Nice guy other than that but we don't care for him for that very reason.
The sooner we get rid of the "I'm a victim" mentality in the country the better off we'll be and that goes with racism, welfare, unemployment, and any other handouts we're giving to those that don't deserve it. Now some may treat that as a racist statement but there are many more whites receiving those handouts than blacks so yea I'm calling my own race out on this one.
