Westboro Baptist Church Protests in the National Capital Region on Memorial Day

For anyone planning on attending Memorial Day events in the National Capital Region, please be aware that The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is planning two demonstrations for Memorial Day, May 30, 2011:

Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, May 30, 2011, 0900 - 1100 hours, WBC is picketing “doomed America's worship of the dead heroes,"

The National Memorial Day Parade, Washington, DC, May 30, 2011, 1230 - 1330 hours, where they will warn America to turn from her sins.

15 - 20 nutcases vs. 250,000 bikers, veterans, friends and family. Hmmm. Not the smartest thing these idiots could do.

As an LSU graduate and student, I was proud of my school that day.

Hate to see these WBC folks dishonoring those that fight to protect they're right to do so.

Everytime I hear the name "Westboro Baptist Church" I can't help but think of that religious zealot kid from "There will be Blood". Goddamn he was annoying as fuck.

Back to the subject at hand.....it warms my heart to read about the outpouring of support from the public and The Patriot Guard in keeping these people at bay.

Freedom of speech is such a rusty, double edged sword sometimes.

I am curious what it would take to get them listed as a "Hate Group". There is no other hallowed ground than our final resting places for our fallen heroes.

It's God's will - ask them.

Patience - I heard it from what many believe to be a learned theologian versed in God's word that they will all go away by 21 October, anyways.

Why has no one picketed their church services? Crowds with signs reading God hates traitors and incest would be appropriate. Is there something wrong with the people of Kansas? (As a Missourian I am sure there is!!)

Because they don't have a church. No building, no congregation other than the family. Their church is their family. That's it. I am sure if there was something to picket it would have been done by now. They have set themselves up as a church for purely monitary reasons. They are tax exempt and they make millions every year on lawsuits. I am sure Christ is very proud they are following his teachings so well :(

I am sure when the old man dies there will be literally thousands there for his send off to hell.

Bingo.

I would assume extreme care is used by their members to avoid any physical confrontations or do anything pro-active that could lead themselves to be investigated as a terrorist organization or hate group.

Unfortunately, they are at the very edge of Freedom of Speech liberties, but their entire mantra is set up to ensure they don't step over it.

Why not?The fact that Ben Haas exercised his first amendment rights in a way that is repugnant should not absolve those students from their efforts to limit his right to free speech through the implied threat of mob violence. We either have a Bill of Rights or we don't.

I don't know about that. It seems that both sides had a point of view and both were expressing it--just one louder than the other. If there's a lesson to be learned, perhaps Ben Haas should learn to properly plan his little demonstrations and ensure he has sufficient support on hand. Otherwise, some may perceive that his actual objective was to incite a confrontation.

Big Teddy :munchinI may be jaded. I went to Cal. Free speech is taken for granted there.

I remember one of many afternoons when students were protesting the ROTC program outside of Callahan Hall, or rather, the collection of interconnected double wides that had replaced the original Callahan Hall which protesters had burned to the ground two years earlier.

A NROTC cadet was standing watch by an entry door, just in case, reading a copy of the student newspaper. I asked him what he thought of the protesters with characteristic snarkiness (but without a hint of bitterness). He smiled, gestured at the crowd with his chin, beamed, said, "That's why we're here," and turned the page. His meaning was immediately clear.

"Learned"...yeah...well he sorta missed a key point in his effort to elevate himself above God (Mat 24:36)

Too much "religion", not enough Faith.

These slimeballs are just that. They can put any label they want on the side of their van...doesn't hide their stench.
