Barack Obama To Explore His Irish Roots
25 Comments6:05pm UK, Sunday May 22, 2011

Vicki Hawthorne, Ireland correspondent

The Queen has just left but now President Barack Obama is visiting Ireland, ahead of his state visit to the UK.

His trip to the Emerald Isle on Monday is being seen as a boost to the country amid all its economic woes, but it is also a chance for the US President to look up some family.

As well as undertaking diplomatic engagements in Dublin he is expected to travel to Moneygall in County Offaly, which prides itself as being an ancestral home of the 49-year-old.

The President's great-great-great-grandfather Falmouth Kearney was a shoemaker and lived in the rural village.

On the day he walks down the pavements of this village hopefully I will get to shake his hand and it will definitely be very real that day.

Henry Healy, an eighth cousin to Barack Obama
There's no doubt Americans love to have an Irish connection, and the Irish are loving this particular link-up too.

Local church records detail President Obama's family ties to Moneygall.

Records show that Mr Obama's great-great-great grandfather was born in Ireland in 1831 and left for America in 1850.

When the ancestral link was first revealed four years ago, the news was met with initial scepticism.

But the villagers shrugged off the jokes and are now about to reap the rewards of a presidential visit.

Moneygall resident Henry Healy has traced a family connection and is an eighth cousin to Mr Obama.

Mr Healy said: "It's always been surreal but now again it is becoming more and more of a reality.

"On the day he walks down the pavements of this village hopefully I will get to shake his hand and it will definitely be very real that day."

The entire village has received a fresh coat of paint, with one resident going as far as to paint the American flag on the front of his home.

The pavements have also been replaced and fresh flowers are being planted in doorways.

Moneygall school principal Eugene Ryan said: "This connection was found out in 2007 and it has been brilliant for the whole community.

"I think it has resurrected the kind of parish and community spirit that may be was always there but maybe was dormant for a while."

We just never imagined this would happen in anyone's lifetime ... We are living history at the moment and it's brilliant!

Moneygall pub owner Majella Hayes
A bust of Mr Obama already sits proudly on the bar of the village pub and pictures have adorned their walls since he was elected into office.

Pub owner Majella Hayes said he can be sure of a warm welcome when he stops off for a tour during his short stay in Ireland.

She said: "There's absolutely great excitement, it's a kind of a feeling of something unreal happening because we just never imagined this would happen in anyone's lifetime and it's a huge thing.

"And as we say here we are living history at the moment and it's brilliant."

President Obama has put Moneygall on the map and the villagers are putting him on t-shirts, which are for sale on the main street.

Some have a picture of the president holding a pint of Guinness, one simply says: "What's the craic Barack?"

This visit is not only about celebrating a seemingly unlikely family history, but it's also about giving a rural village and a country a much needed boost.

Why is he trying to ID himself with the Irish all of a sudden?

:D

Prolly cause he just screwed himself out of the Jewish vote with that "'67 Borders" statement.

Some days, I bet he'd love to punch the hell outta that damn teleprompter. Pow! Straight to the moon.

police label Obama with 'mildly offensive' Punjabi word for visit to UK

More than one person has wanted to call Barack Obama a 'smart alec', and now British police will get the chance to do so without getting reprimanded.
That's because Scotland Yard has tapped the codename 'Chalaque' to refer to the U.S. president for security reasons during his upcoming state visit to the United Kingdom May 24-26.
Indarjit Singh, a Punjabi speaker in the UK who is director of the Network of Sikh Organisations, told the Sunday Times the word 'is sometimes used when we want to denigrate someone who we think is too clever for their own good'.

Another Punjabi speaker told the paper the word Chalaque is 'not considered rude', but could be 'mildly offensive'.
It is also said to mean 'cheeky, crafty and cunning'.
With his leadership of the recent successful raid on Osama bin Laden's compound, the president certainly showed himself to be the latter two.

Scotland Yard insiders told the Sunday Times that their codewords are 'randomly generated by computer', but the paper wondered why officials decided to stick with them, when they could have simply had another word selected that would be less provocative.
Still, that's not the kind of thing that normally rattles Obama, who recently told reporters he keeps calm under pressure by taking some time off for 'golf, laughter and travel'.
Barack and Michelle Obama will be guests of Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace this week....

O'Bama (http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100088971/obama-oh-puh-lease/)

James Delingpole

Ah Bejaysus and Begorrah! Oi’ll be swearin’ boi the auld shrine to the Vorgin with the shamrocks growin’ round it next to the hill where Cuchullain slew the Great Leprechaun of Kildare on St Patrick’s Day that Barack Seamus O’Toole Flaherty Joyce O’Bama is the most Irish US president that ever set foot on the Emerald Oisle, so he is, so he is.

Except, when he’s in Africa, of course, when he disappears into the dry ice and re-emerges with a grass skirt and a bone through his nose and declares himself to be Mandingo, Prince of the Bloodline of the Bonga People, Drinker of Cattle Urine, Father of A Thousand Warrior Sons, Keeper of King Solomon’s Mines, Barehanded Slayer of Lions, Undaunted Victim of the Evil Colonial British Empire.

And in the Middle East, where he is Al-Barak Hussein Obama, Protector of the Holy Shrine, Smiter of the Kuffar, Lion of the Desert, Tent-Loving-Aficionado-of-the-Oversweetened-Coffee, Chomper of Sheeps’ Eyeballs, Restorer of the Caliphate.

Etc.

Tony Blair used to do this trick too, his accent mutating from broad Glaswegian to genteel Edinburgh to Mummerset to Estuary to Richard E Grant to Sarf London Grime – often in the course of one Downing Street reception – the better to persuade his target audience that he was their kind of guy. And it is, of course, the hallmark of an unutterable charlatan.

I’ve argued before that Tony Blair and Barack Obama have an awful lot in common. Both are lawyers; both are snake-oil-salesman; both claim to be post-partisan, and Third Way and consensual; both play the acceptable, moderate-seeming public face of a regime chock full of Communists, class warriors, single issue rabble rousers, malcontents, communitarians and eco-loons hell bent on destroying every last vestige of what once made their country great. And both do (or did) the things dodgy political leaders always do when the going gets tough at home and their domestic audience finally wises up to how totally useless they are: they hop on the plane and pose as international statesman instead.

My colleague Damian Thompson appears to be under the impression that Obama is a great guy because he said nice things about the Queen. Look, I think the Queen’s great too, but did it really not occur to my distinguished colleague (and editor) that there might have been a hint of an ulterior motive here? Obama can’t stand Britain (his wife likes us even less): he made that clear enough when he sent back Winston Churchill’s bust and dissed our Prime Minister with those dodgy DVDS. He blames us for what happened to his grandfather during Mau Mau. He doesn’t believe in the Special Relationship. Are we honestly supposed to believe in that during the subsequent year in office, Obama has since acquired such wisdom and insight that he suddenly realises how special we are?

Of course he hasn’t. Obama is just doing now what all bullies and losers start doing when they realise how unpopular they are and that everyone is abandoning them. They suck up to anybody and everybody. They whore themselves piteously before enemies they once considered beneath their contempt. Fain will they fill their bellies with husks that swine eat – but which no man will give them: and serve them jolly well right, too!

By all means let us enjoy watching Obama smarm and grovel and ingratiate himself like some presidential Uriah Heep. But for heaven’s sake let us never give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s a cold fish and would certainly never show any mercy towards us were the roles to be reversed.

Now, Obama is 'a little bit Polish,' too

By Christi Parsons, Washington Bureau
May 28, 2011, 5:00 p.m.
Reporting from Warsaw, Poland — President Obama brought his genealogical odyssey full circle here on Saturday when, just days after paying homage to his ancestral roots in Ireland, he announced that he is also "a little bit Polish."

He says he's Polish by way of Chicago, that is, which according to local calculations is often said to be the largest city of Polonia outside Warsaw.

"If you live in Chicago and you haven't become a little bit Polish," Obama joked, "then something's wrong with you."

It has been a festival of ethnicity for Obama in Europe, just weeks after the release of his long-form Hawaiian birth certificate settled -- for most of the people who still wondered, anyway -- the fact that he is a native-born American....

As Obama went on to England and France, copies of his family tree in wide distribution suggested roots on his mother's side among those populations as well.

In public remarks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk after a private meeting on Saturday, Obama praised the resilience of the Polish people and their example to young democracies everywhere.

Their story inspires him, too, Obama told Tusk.

"In a way," he said, "I am part of Poland."
