Our tax dollars at work, this time at the Office of Naval Research. Their motto: Revolutionary Research...Relevant results

press release from navy.mil here (http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=60241)

link to presentation off the NECO site here (http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:zi0_kMmbiJgJ:https://www.neco.navy.mil/upload/N66604/N6660410R0092GFI_MMOWGLI_TBAA_100092.pdf+MMOWGLI&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESjXEfJEQ74l5nV4RadARhwe3VtZepSHPsIZwchu OC64x3Z99Axv-ssBTGwCAtPn298Z8OfVjM-M78zKlrcq4GmI1TREvPyqVzfIx2fHtIF7-Q1MVnbz04b8gfTpPrFh7cQH6ye8&sig=AHIEtbT4EW-ErUweRfzm6cHkbwd1YMKO2Q&pli=1)

I originally saw this via Slashdot's news feed here (http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/05/11/0442258/US-Navy-Creates-MMO-To-Fight-Somali-Pirates)

I think it would be a better use of their time if they simply did a search here for "somali pirates" and heeded the advice from you QPs. Now *that* would be relevant, not some open war game.

Well, for the Navy, if all they want to do about Pirates is play games, well then..........

Not much is going to change.

I got an idea. Launch a few decoy ships, lure the pirates in and wipe them out with PBR weaponry. They'll quit after a while.

I like your thinking Sir!

then there's this (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/05/pabst_blue_ribbon_bottle_resur.html). Parts of a 60' tall PBR bottle. Those should sink a skiff or two.

All kidding aside your thought reminds me of the Q-ships/Decoy raiders of WW1/WW2 with their Point Blank Range and further armament used for taking out U-boats. Wolf in sheep's clothing indeed.

I'm a squid thru and thru. Tried being green but never could make sense out of the training program. (Once saw a sh*tcan with instructions stenciled on the damned lid! What was that ... ?)

All that being said, I can't find anything you Army guys have said that I disagree with re: dealing with the scourge of the sea the pirate threat is. PBR's? Yeah, ok...personally I'd embark a couple of Marine apache helos on a DDG and turn them lose against everything from the "mother ship" to the hideouts on the beach.

IMHO, the USN needs to get off their politically correct asses and do their damned job.

Just saying ...

I said PBR weaponry. Mark 19's, Mod 2, and 60's. On a ship, not a boat.

They need to start deploying the same type of ships used to stop cartel dope loads on the Somali pirates. Just fast and oh yeah weapons free no catch and release program. Additionally in keeping with recent musilm traditions the pirates should be hurried at sea with 24 hours of death. or left as frigging drift wood/ shark bait.

Not a bad idea really.

Allowing thousands of people to attack a problem in a simulator all at once will probably yield some pretty interesting results.

Just like any of the shooter games on PS3 or X360, a certain tactic will show to be popular after a short time. Then a counter gets developed.

But by letting thousands of people do it, it takes weeks instead of years to figure out a solution.

But in reality, if they simply went on the all-out offense, the Navy could solve this in a few days.

In counter point to the OP.

Bruce A. Elleman, Andrew Forbes, and David Rosenberg, eds, "Piracy and Maritime Crime: Historical and Modern Case Studies," Naval War College Newport Papers, no. 35 (Newport, RI: Naval War College Press, 2010), lays out historical contexts and contemporaneous issues surrounding modern day maritime piracy.

The role of war gaming in the navy's preparations to fight a general war against the Soviet Union in the post-Vietnam era is covered in Bud Hay and Bob Gile, "Global War Game: The First Five Years," Naval War College Newport Papers, no. 4 (Newport, RI: Naval War College Press, 1993) and Robert Gile, "Global War Game, Second Series: 1984-1988," Naval War College Newport Papers, no. 20 (Newport, RI: Naval War College Press, 2004).
