On Military Spouse Appreciation Day, we have an opportunity to not only honor the husbands and wives of our service members, but also thank them by actively expressing our gratitude in both word and deed." -- President Barack Obama
What is it? On May 6, 2011, Army leaders will express their gratitude to Army spouses for their support of Soldiers. The theme of Military Spouse Appreciation Day 2011 is "Celebrating Military Spouses: Team Members in the Army's Success."
What has the Army done? The Army will pay tribute to spouses through individual and group recognition. To profess that gratitude to spouses, the Army community will pause to show its appreciation for all that wives and husbands of active-duty, Reserve, and National Guard Soldiers accomplish daily. The Army will acknowledge that spouses are the backbone of family support. By marking Military Spouse Appreciation Day, the Army reaffirms its commitment to supporting and honoring spouses of Soldiers who are stationed stateside and overseas, and those deployed to combat zones.
Why is it important to the Army? Supporting spouses is critical to the Army. The strength of our Soldiers comes from the strength of their families. Army spouses routinely put the welfare of their Soldier, family and nation above their own.
The Army recognizes the important role spouses play in today's military. Army spouses are community leaders, mothers, fathers and Soldiers. They keep our Army families on track.
Additionally, the Army would especially like to recognize our surviving spouses. Their loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice. Survivors carry on with a devotion to their families and our nation, beyond their period of grief and sorrow. They live the cost of freedom.
What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future? In 2007, the Army, through the Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management, instituted the Army Family Covenant and the Army Community Covenant, in part to recognize the commitment and increasing sacrifices of Army families, and to acknowledge that a Soldier's strength comes from the strength of families.
The Army will continue to provide families a strong, supportive environment. The Army is committed to improving family readiness through funding of programs, better health care, housing, schools, youth services, child care, education and employment opportunities, and we will continue to build upon and improve the tenets of the Army Family Covenant.
Additionally, on April 12, 2011, the First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Biden launched "Joining Forces," a comprehensive national initiative to mobilize all sectors of society to give servicemembers and their families the opportunities and support they have earned. The campaign focuses on employment, education and wellness issues that affect military families, including the anxiety spouses and children may face in dealing with deployments, illness, injury and high mobility.
