View Full Version : Quest for the cup

I know there are a few fans of hockey on this board, so I thought I would see what everyones thoughts are on the coming "Second Season".

I have my favorites, as I'm sure most others do too.

Lets hear em; can the Canucks bring home the cup to go with their Presidents Trophy? Can the Habs hoist it at home where those die hard fans think it belongs?

The Caps spent the first part of the season drunk and lying in the gutter, but managed to recover and win their division. They are up two games on the Rangers.

I grew up on Long Island. Went to many Islander games in the 70's. I remember seeing blood splash into the Plexi Glass. What a game it was. They don't make enforcers like they use to.

Seemingly, one need only go to the nearest grade school these days to see blood splashing around.

But the worst thing now is that the Canadiens have lost the last two to the Bruins even after completely having out played the Bruins for the most part in the last game. The Habs should have won that game by 10 goals.

And now for the other side of the coin....

I was at one time one of those super fast centers. Just used to skate circles around the slower, lumbering defensemen until I got nailed against the dasher in front of the team bench one day. Ruptured a disc in my back. The next six months were an unenjoyable blur due to the pain drugs.

Then I became a defenseman with better than average defenseman skating abilities and started nailing wingers and centers and still score goals. I just never developed a good enough slap shot.

I too love hockey but I never enjoyed the enforcers. Have you ever noticed how the game is so much faster and more exciting when it is played on an international style rink (wider and longer) and fighting is pretty much forbidden? I have always enjoyed the Olympic and International games more than the every day NHL games.

Or am I wrong????

I was never big on the enforcer types either. I played D and would play more of a finesse game. Dont take me wrong when you gotta throw your body around I'd have no problem doing it, but being good on my skates and just forcing guys out wide and cornering them was more my style. An enforcer was the cause behind my knee injuries, Highschool hockey where some guy decided to take a cheap shot on me.

Having said that, none of you guys can deny the satisfaction you got catching that winger or center cross the blue line with his head down.

I used to play on olympic sized rinks all the time, I remember the way the game changed, I loved it sometimes and hated it others.

Oh and LETS GO CAPS! Gotta wear my Caps jersey in tomorrow to piss off the local Ranger fans :)

I always found that defensemen were more prone to skating while keeping their heads down, if for no other reason, than they were not used to skating with the puck. My nickname was't "Snake Hips" for nothing. I layed in some beautiful hip checks back in the day.

And now a recap:

The Caps stomping the Rangers was to be expected. No disappointment there, even for a Ranger fan.

The Flyers beating the Sabers is a bit of a disappointment as I could never stand the Flyers. Good series though.

Canucks slipping by the Blackhawks was somewhat expected but still a disappointment for sentimentally wanting last years champs to go further in the playoffs. Fantastic series.

Sharks beating the Kings: A hell of a series, but I did not have a dog in that race.

The Redwings sweeping the Coyotes: Expected, but I hope the Wings have not fallen asleep during the last week.

Predators vs. Ducks: No horse in this race but some pretty good games nonetheless.

Pens vs. Bolts: Some really good games. Would prefer the Pens to advance with the singular hope that Crosby and Melkin will eventually play in the playoffs.

Canadiens & Bruins: Some unbelievable skating and goal tending. Still have to go with my Habs.

Ha snake hips. That's great. I am however a little shocked that a person living in PA isn't a flyers fan. But hey I never liked the flyers as a team. But I do however really like the Organization and actually dealing with them.

If the caps can keep it up I think they may have a good chance to hit the finals.

I agree with Casey though. If Philadelphia wins another championship I can only imagine the amount of cars destroyed and fights which will take place. After all there is no better way to celebrate than by causing mass destruction.

I did not always live in PA. I have been a Habs fan since I was a little kid and never lived in Montreal or Quebec either. But, in those days you were not often disappointed cheering for the Habs.

Back in the day, when Dave Schultz played for the Flyers (Did I say "played"? I meant to say "fought") I do not think he went two game straight without starting a fight for no really good reason other than to take a good player or two off the ice with him. You see, he usually picked a fight with a smaller, skilled player and then that team's enforcer had to fight him just to get back at him. Schultz would be penalized, the guy that he started fighting with would be penalized and usually the other team's enforcer. He epitomized "goon hockey".

What really swayed me to disliking them though is one particular game. I think the Flyers were playing the Rangers in a playoff gamer and Bill Barber (a winger) skated past an opposing player. As he passed by the player Barber took a flying leap over the opposing player's stick, without ever touching it, and did a face plant onto the ice. Back then there was only one ref on the ice and he did not see the "tripping" infraction, he only saw the end result and called a penalty against the opposing team. The Flyer fans thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Barber continued the act by bitching and moaning to the ref about the opposing player's lack of respect for the game. IMHO that was the epitome of being a douchebag. I have disliked the Flyers ever since. IIRC he was always considered to be the first human being to participate in, if not excel at the sport of "Ice Diving".

Yeah, they should make the finals, but I think the real Stanley Cup finals will be Detroit vs. Vancouver if they both make it to the Western Conf Finals. The winner of that series should be able to beat the Caps, unless they are completely mangled by then.

I have similar feelings about the flyers but with more of the current guys. The first NHL game I went to was a flyers game and one of the flyers players started a fight before the game even started. Plus living in the area I would play the little flyers a lot and hated that team too haha. They were as dirty as the NHL team.

I hope anyone coming out of the western conference is banged up by then. I would love to see the caps win the cup. I can only imagine that celebration parade.

I agree. Keith Ballard's hip check (http://www.sportsviews.com/video/7710/NHL_Playoffs_-_Keith_Ballard_Hipchecks_Jordin_Tootoo_April_28_20 11) on Nashville's Tootoo the other night was textbook and would not have been a penalty even just 15 years ago. Still, he spent the next two minutes in the box for it (http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Clip+check+Ballard+still+tough/4694896/story.html).

I think a bit of both. The comment during the game was that it was a bad call because refs just don't see hip checks any more and people are worried about concussions. Even still, the hit that laid out Simon Gagne last night was not penalized even though it stopped the game for five minutes (nor should it have been- it, too, was a clean hit).

I never said that "hockey is just fighting". And personally, I do not think it should be banned from the game. My comment about "Goon Hockey" was aimed at certain individuals that seemingly did nothing but fight. At one time in history that seemd to be 99% of what Dave schultz was all about when on the ice. The man had 472 penalty minutes in one season and that was a season with only 80 games played. Minimally, that is almost 10% of possible playing time that he was in the "sin bin." That does not include all of the time lost due to "Game Misconduct" and "Match" penalties, which, IIRC, are only recorded as 10 minute penalties even if the Match penalty was given in the first minute of the game. But, that was also the same year that the Flyers won the Stanley Cup. So who is to say whether it was right or wrong.

Most,if not all, probably never put on a pair of CCM's let alone ever really played in a game........

I used Bauer Supremes for a long time and then went to CCM SuperTacks when they came out. I even used a pair of those Lange molded skates for a while because they had that thick boot insert that offered more cushioning. My ankles were taking a beating. All skates were from the pre-Nylite blade era.

At one time I played full-time in three different leagues at the same time and would pick up extra games from teams in other leagues that would sneak me onto the rink. My coach in college actually got wind of me playing early in the morning with one of the rec team's at school and got super PO'ed at me. I was just used to skating for four to six hours per day and was not getting that amount of skating between team practices and games. I was what everyone referred to as a "rink rat."

I was sixteen years old when I first played in a semi pro game............

I was 17 years old.

The "first play" of the game is where you show your opponent what he can expect for the next 3 periods.........

Agreed, but my method was trying my best to score on my first shift. Some teams never seemed to think that someone would skate at 110% of their ability in the first minute of the game. I did it the entire game.

When I played no one wore helmets.......

It was the same for me for the most part and I have one big-ass scar on my scalp to prove it. A puck deflected off of something and creased my scalp for about 15 to 20 stitches. Helmets started showing up in the mid to late 70's, but they weren't mandatory until about '79 or '80. I actually hated wearing one, but I did notice that once helmets were mandatory that guys started carrying their sticks a little higher and therefore closer to my face and head.

The hell with 15 years ago, it should not have been a penalty three/four nights ago. That was one of the best hip checks that I have seen in years. After re-reading the stated NHL rule I still think that it was a clean hit. The only reason that any part of Ballard's body came near Tootoo's knees was because it looked like Tootoo was trying to launch over the check and raised his left knee into Ballard's body.

Originally posted by greenberetTFS:

To me a mean player was someone that liked to bang bodies on the ice. Nothing wrong with that. Personally, I could bang bodies with most. I just kept its frequency in perspective as it usually slowed me down and prevented me from getting in on the rush up ice.

A dirty player to me is someone who takes a dive, butt-ends someone during a check, steps on the ice solely to pick a fight, or someone that throws their stick at you and it goes through the space between the skate boot and the top of the blade, forcing you to do an extremely hard face plant. That actually happened to me once and my nose still shows the effects of the extremely hard face plant.

Tampa Bay has been a pleasant surprise - they really can move the puck.

Bruins / Flyers tonight in Boston.

The Bruins have not disappointed fans this playoff season with a 7th game OT victory over the Habs and some great goal-tending and some nice hitting and puck handling so far against the Flyers.

Thomas has owned the Flyers, thus far.

But, as a Boston fan - last year's disastrous collapse to Philly is never far from mind - less injuries to key personnel this year, though, may be the difference.

I was a Flyers fan as a kid and still like the team. But the Kings are my team now.

I still play but in a non-checking league. There is still a lot of contact but you can't lay someone out as they cross the blue line. I have to say how happy I am to find some hockey fans and players here.

Yes! He scored a mighty 9 goals and had 17 assists the year that he had 472 penalty minutes. :D

He actually scored 20 goals the year prior to that. Somewhat respectable, but not why Fred Shero signed him. I have heard for years that he had this Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality split for years. He was a royal bastard on the ice, but very shy, nonchalant and unassuming off the ice. Who knew?

The game of hockey back then - mid 70's was a different game - pre-Russian and European influence.

I suspect that Bobby Clarke could have played in any era, though.

Ken "the Rat" Linesman (a pain in the ass to play against - but someone player's liked on their team) played for the Flyers and eventually played for the Bruins.

Look at the size of the players then and now, too - 185 pounds was a pretty big forward back in the day - now they (skill forwards) are 225 and bigger AND faster !

Yep. Clarke was my hockey hero as a kid. He could play today using treachery, but his skill level alone would put him in the AHL today.

Schultz was only like 6 feet and 200 lbs. Now enforcers are up to 6'8" and 270.

Compared to the 70's it is truly a different game - just about every kid from Boston played hockey in one way shape or form in the 70's - I need only say #4...Robert Gordon Orr.

We were acquaintances with Ken Hodge (who was one of the bigger players in his day @ 6'2" 215 pounds) and my family was friends with Brad Park (6' 190 pounds) an NHL Hall of Famer. They were incredible players and gentlemen. Yet, they'd be dwarfed in size by many players in the NHL today.

On another note (I think the statute of limitations has run)...I grew up literally sneaking into the old Boston Garden as a kid to watch the Bruins with my cousins...those were the days...obstructed view seats and all.

Compare Hodge and Park to today's Captain of the Boston Bruins.

Zdeno Chara - 6'9", 255 pound, Slovakian monster who can move, hit, shoot and fight - a forward's nightmare.

Number: 33
Height: 6' 9"
Weight: 255
Shoots: Left
Born: Mar 18, 1977 (Age 34)
Birthplace: Trencin, Slovakia

It looks like my Wings will have an early exit this year due to their sub-par performance against the Sharks (damn you Niemi!).

I'll be watching as much hockey as I can before the second season ends, regadless.

:)

I have no idea how we do so well against the Wings but also get bounced out of the playoffs every year. Our series could have gone either way IMO.

The Wings forced a game seven. It comes down to who shows up Thursday evening - should be one helluva game. :lifter

This game 7 also means Tampa will have to schedule their games around Disney on Ice (http://www.nesn.com/2011/05/buzz-lightyear-could-cause-more-problems-than-canadiens-and-flyers-in-bruins-playoff-run-as-tampa-fa.html). :D

It is the beginning of the third period of game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals with the Boston Bruins leading 3-0. Is there a way for the B's to lose this game? Sure, but I do not think that will happen.

The Canucks have played flat for every game in Boston and had their gonads handed to them by the Bruins. Conversely, every game played in Vancouver has been pretty much even with the Canucks scoring a single goal late to win.

Tonight it seems as if the game is being played in Boston (actually they are in Vancouver) and the Canucks are again searching for who has their gonads. I hope, at least, that the Canucks make the final period interesting. Doubtful.

Nope!!! 4-0 final score. Not a bad game, just not close. The Canucks just seemd to be missing a step or two. And a few goals.

Congrats to the Bruins. Never thought that they had a chance in the playoffs.

Exactly, as we also just saw in a different sport with the Dallas Mavs. Work ethic & perseverance CAN beat razzle dazzle hype.

How I wish more of these sports would return to old school...fundamentals....hard work...team work....smart mental play....gutting it out....playing till the last buzzer goes off.

I guess my age is showing. ;)

As for the Boston Bruins, I'll say this.

[Yet more extensive ranting deleted.]

Congratulations!:lifter

Okay, I guess I am a little bitter. But on the upside, my crop of purple and gold sour grapes is going to win national awards this season. The secret? I bathed the seeds with tears of rage before planting them in a bed of crushed hopes and dreams.

Oh, Sig, take it like a champion. Ramp up for a little bit of LA rioting and it will all feel better in the morning. :D
