You hadn't lived until your SCUBA Det was tasked to run a water DZ for the Big Mac and had to pull him into a Zodiac. :eek: That was work! ;)

Rest in Peace, LTG. Thank you for a lifetime of service and sacrifice. Your influence and professionalism can never be measured, but has had a profound effect on so many. You will ALWAYS be remembered and NEVER forgotten.

I remember literally bumping into him at the PX on Bragg, he had me by 3 stars to my E3 and 100 pounds, thus I profusely uttered my apologies and stepped aside while he continued on his merry way. IIRC he was carrying a big stogie in his left hand and that occurred in the spring of 1983. RIP Sir.
RIP old friend, we sure made some war stories together that will never be forgotten. Delta6 was his callsign during 1969 44th Special Tactical Zone RVN

I was LTG Mackmull's pilot when he was the commander of the 18th ABN Corps and this is a terrible loss for those of us who had the honor to work for him. He was so much more than a boss.
I was told I HAD to go interview for his pilot's job because he needed an IP in the left seat so he could fly. I really didn't want the job and when he asked me why I wanted the job, I told him, "I didn't". He looked pretty stern and the aide was clearly uncomfortable with my answer. He asked me why I didn't and I told him I never much liked general's pilots because they were all prima donna #$)@holes from the one's I had met. He looked me up and down and started laughing and then said, "that's why you just got the job"
He had a great sense of humor, knew how to chew you a new one if you deserved it, and loved the troops. We often stopped when we flew over a site and he saw some guys sitting around playing cards or BS'ing. He just wanted to stay in touch with the real troops and not the guys who told him what they figured he wanted to hear.
LTG Mackmull was as close to an idol that I could have had. I was honored to be considered part of his staff. I retired in 90 and we stayed in touch for many years. I haven't spoken to him in the last five or so and now I guess I'll have to wait until we meet again. I hope he needs a pilot when I get there :-)
Thanks to all of you who helped pull him into the boats when he did his water jumps. He had the greatest respect for you.
I just can't say enough about the kind of man and soldier he was. I will miss him terribly.

Good words, any soldier would be proud to be remembered by one of his soldiers in that fashion
Met the General twice during my short career, first time in 1976 or 77 at the 326 Engr. BN mess hall when he was the Assistant 101st Div. Commander, he was ahead of me in the chow line one morning and handed me his tray and let me ahead of him having some kind words to interject to a young NCO. The second tme we met was in Tokyo at the airport in 1978, I was on my way home Cat Y from the 2d ID we were both in civvies and I recognized him and went up to visit, I related the story about the mess hall to him and told him how I was headed to Ft. Knox but would rather be going back to the 101st, he told me to sign in at the 101st and to go see BG Kasner the Asst. DC and try to get reassigned. I took his advice and spent about a week at the 101st but to no avail. He was a soldiers soldier!! I am so sorry to hear of his passing. God Bless Him!!
