I almost put this in the Comedy fora, but being a FOG, I figured one of the SEAL Operators that hangs here can clarify??

Navy’s New Working Uniform Delayed
March 25, 2011
Military.com|by Christian Lowe

The Navy's top officer said March 23 the service has delayed fielding a new uniform designed for Sailors who are deployed to land-based combat zones.

In remarks to reporters at a breakfast meeting in Washington, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead said he's still waiting on proposals for which design to field in the Naval Working Uniform Type II and Type III camouflage patterns. The CNO also indicated a desire to abandon the old tri-color desert uniform worn by Sailors and SEALs for years.

"I'm trying to get the number of uniforms we use as lean as we can because, even though it may not sound like a lot of money in the general scheme of things, uniforms are hugely expensive," Roughead said. "You eventually get to the point where the term uniform is obsolete because everybody wants their own and it's no longer a uniform."

Though Roughead wants to guard against customization, he conceded that SEALs and Sailors who support them such as Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen and explosives disposal teams have a requirement for a so-called "fighting uniform" specifically designed for their missions.

"Clearly the uniform that the SEALs are wearing has some very special features that I believe need to be in limited distribution," he said.

Splain sumt'n Lucie,,

WTF are the "very special features" with "limited distribution" ????

Come on Navy, no need to waste tax payer dollars to make all these diffrent kinds of special uniforms with diffrent special features. Just stick with one good one. Like the Army ACUs or it's upcoming replacement Multi Camo.

I wish Gates had the balls to tell DoD to pick one battle uniform for all services.

Granted, the need for something in the desert is not the same as the jungle and is not the same in the snow,, but we must have 40 variants across the 6 services..

I think the present Navy ACU patterned uniform is AWESOME!
That clever combination of different shades of blue. . . .so if you fall overboard you don't have to worry about anyone ever seeing you.

One uniform across the board would be one of the greatest days of my life. I have accumulated uniforms in ABU, ACU, ABSG, Multi-Cam, BDU, and DCU. I have gear in all the above patterns plus OD, Ranger Green, Coyote Tan, Coyote Brown, Coyote different Brown, Black, Foliage Green, and various shades of spray paint, and I'm a freakin conventional guy.

Uniformity of uniforms - never has been...never will be. I'd spend my time worrying about something important and realistically probable.

I'm impressed that a navy uniform has a website all to itself. If squids fall overboard wearing all that gear they are going straight to the bottom of the Marianas Trench.

Circa 1967 weren't all the services breaking starch in cotton fatigues, or am I having another senior moment?

Now isn't that something... I have said this repeatedly, but NO ONE seems to share my sense of humor. Not that this is funny...

You mean like Douglas Brent Hegdahl III (http://www.professionalsoldiers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=299230&postcount=1) treading in the South China sea watching his ship steam away? Excellent read by the way Sir, thank you for posting that a while back.
