I hope i have this in the right place....when it comes to electronics...i'm dumber than a sack of hammers...anyways here goes...

what value do old cell phones have??

is there enough "precious metal" in old cell phones to warrant national commercials offering to purchase old cell phones?

what uses would old cell phones have?

thanks...

God Bless

I know some uses that some people are finding for them. They aren't so pretty though.

As far as value....sure if you're a company buying them by the thousands for next to nothing. Are you going to get a lot for a single phone? No. Not at all. Even an iPhone that's a generation old can be had for $50 right now with a contract. If that's to get one that's all pretty and working, I don't know how you'd get a lot for a beat up old one.

Lee, donate the phone to some charity or womans shelter. That's what I do. TS

The value is selling them to third world countries where cheap labor can either fix them or recycle them for parts and sell the end results on the local economy.

the reason for my questions is...there is a commercial on tv in our area offering "cash for your old cell phone" in the style of the "we buy gold" commercials....

the only two reasons i could come up with are covered by both noroad and squid...

thinking as i do...these phones could in reality provide untraceable commo for terrs...paranoia, perhaps....as well as ied facilitators....

hopefully, without getting my foot stuck in my mouth, i can attempt to explain my train of thought...

every man in a unit could be provided comm, for example indigenious pers who are partial to "radical" islams' cause. from fire team to batt size the unit(s) could be supported by "backpack or building top repeaters"...command and control overwatch comm would be much quicker than currently available....

and now that i'm in over my head...i hope you guys understand my train of thought and should my thought have merit, you can take the ball and run with it
i don't understand modern technology and can only imagine the uses these things are capable of providing....

i hope you guys will forgive me if i have wasted your time with this...and now...back to my sewing

God Bless

There are some statistics out that there are roughly 150,000,000 cells phones thrown away each year in the U.S. alone. This roughly equates to $650,000,000 in gold that is tossed. That doesn't account for the other metals like silver and copper that are used in the phone as well. I think that it is more of an easy money maker then anything else. There was something on The Discovery Channel about it a week or so ago.

I will erase all of the personal data off the bag-o-phones I've been collecting and get them over to the drop off point.

Thanks for the link.
