:Dhttp://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2011/02/25/did-cbs-drama-good-wife-cross-line-naming-palin-supporting-character-mcveigh/

The CBS drama “The Good Wife” has raised a few eyebrows by naming Gary Cole’s character, a ballistics expert, Tea Party member, and Sarah Palin supporter, “Kurt McVeigh,” a not so subtle comparison to Timothy McVeigh, the man behind the 1995 Oklahoma City bombings.

So was the writing an attempt to discredit the former Republican Vice Presidential candidate by drawing links to Timothy McVeigh, or was it a simple artistic decision?

"Calling a character 'Kurt McVeigh' conjures up unmistakable images of mass murdering terrorist Timothy McVeigh. Hollywood screenwriters don't live in a cultural vacuum; they help to create American culture,” Matthew Vadum, senior editor at the Capital Research Center in Washington D.C told FOX411’s Pop Tarts. “They had to have known that making the character a conservative with a fondness for Sarah Palin was a clever way to take a jab at the former Alaska governor."

But the show’s executive producer/co-creator, Robert King, said the naming of Cole’s character was not intended to portray Republicans or Tea Party members in a negative light.

“The Kurt McVeigh character was introduced mid-season our first year, and at that time, he was given a name that was intended to play into the anti-conservative prejudices of the more liberal partner, Diane," King told Pop Tarts. "So no red flags were raised because the point was to satirize Diane's prejudice against his name. The point of the McVeigh character was that he was the most truthful and forthright character on the show, and yet he just happened to be a strong conservative."

“Diane and McVeigh end up falling in love with each other despite their political differences," King said. "So just to be clear, anyone who has seen the show will know that McVeigh is a remarkably positive character, and that Diane's initial bias against both his politics and his name is quickly demolished in the face of the person himself.”

But some critics aren’t buying King’s explanation. Hollywood publicist Angie Meyer said the character's name highlights a double standard that exists within the mainstream media.

"Democrats were up in arms just months ago when Tea Party protesters morphed Obama's image with Hitler on rally signs, yet we're hearing birds chirp when a Palin-like character on primetime TV is parodied into a homeland terrorist? The double standard astounds me,” Meyer said. “If Hollywood wants to play with politics, and create a character using the same surname as an abhorrent terrorist – then CBS has just slapped the face of each one of the Oklahoma City victims, and their loved ones."

Not everyone thinks CBS was out of line, however.

“Timothy McVeigh does happen to have some key beliefs in common with the Tea Party,” entertainment commentator Jenn Hoffman said. “Any way mainstream media can mock and expose those kooks who call themselves Tea Partiers is good for America. Good for CBS.”This isn’t the first time “The Good Wife” has taken a sarcastic stab at Palin. An episode that aired in March last year featured the McVeigh character receiving a gift from a partner of a law firm – a book about Sarah Palin made up of blank pages in a supposedly humorous attempt to represent “the mind and thinking of Sarah Palin” in the wake of her real-life bestseller, “Going Rogue.”

Hmmmm, another show I've never watched.IMO, you are missing an incredibly good show that throws incredible punches at Chicago politics and not a few jabs at the current administration. It also addresses a number of controversial public policy issues in ways that might give attentive viewers something to think about.

As for the McVeigh character, it seems that many if the critics have not watched the episodes in which he's appeared--he eats liberals for lunch then picks his teeth with their bones.

My two cents.

Once Mizz Palin started a reality show. No one including her can Bitch about what anyone says or do's about her. She crossed the line from political to Tabloid entertainment the day her show aired. Just what we need for respect. A president who had a reality show. I wish she would just go away. Sorry little bit of a high jack there

Yeah, but Sarah's not the Tea Party. These Hollywooders hate everything Conservative; Sarah's just an easy target because of her antics.

I agree with Dennis Miller on a great idea for Hollywood hypocrisy. Since Tinsel Town is a petri dish for socialist ideals, I believe they should have to follow this idea-everyone gets an Oscar because they are all equal. No actor or movie can be recognized and awarded for being better than another because that just wouldn't be fair. They are all putting in the same amount of effort to entertain us. And if the shitty films that (we'd rather suck-start a Glock than have to watch) can't get a as big of a draw at the box office as the big-budget productions then the wealth needs to be spread out evenly so all movies are equal. The same goes for the actors. The ones who can't act their way out of a paper bag should be subsidized by the ones who can. :D:p

While were bashing Hollywood. The quality of movies absolutely sucked this year. Especially the comedies. I was embarrassed for some of the otherwise talented comedians who were just in horrible films. Tina Fey looked like she was in pain doing Date Night. I guess you cant afford to turn down work these days.

That argument reminds me of the time I got a fellow medical student to walk out of a dean's dinner because I shared my belief that certain medical students shouldn't be granted extra time on tests than their peers. She called me an asshole - then I replied - Okay - so I want to be a professional football player - I'm not as fast as some of those guys and can't catch as well so should I be given a head start on each play and special gloves to give me a fair chance? That's when she left. :D

Forget having the actors subsidize each other - they should still get their multi-million-dollar-per-movie contracts only to come home with what equates to minimum wage - the rest can be put into the social pot they want so badly.

For some reason I don't think they'd be so crazy about what they preach after that... :munchin

I disagree with you on that one...from an educator's point-of-view.

Some people merely need a bit more time to process information - doesn't mean they don't know the material or can't do it. However, I fail to see a problem with the extended time if - reasonably - they've (1) got a documented LD finding which warrants it and (2) they're not looking to be, say an ER Physician, but seeking an MD in something for which they best have an aptitude and where the time constraints are not a critical issue (such as Psychiatry or Dermatology or a similar speciality).

I know such an MD who was given such accomodations at Texas Tech - she's a hell of a Doctor.

In defense of "Date Night"-that was actually Palin cast as Fey to play the part in the flick.

I found The King's Speech to be a movie to be added to my favorites list.

How about this modest proposal.

All socialist actors all make the same wages, after large percentages of taxes are deducted, to support their liberal causes. Casting must also consider talent challenged actors as well, for all parts.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs. That would be fair, right?

The only movie I've seen this year was True Grit, which was pretty good though I doubt any one could play the Duke's role, and steal the role from him. The little girl was great though!

Otherwise, I have no time for most Hollywood types. I'm turned off by all the petty self-aggrandizement and their mutual love affairs with themselves, their hyper sensitive egos, their Marxist dreams for everyone but themselves, and their superiority issues. The useful idiots like Sean Penn, Aleck Baldwin, Charlie Sheen, Oliver Stone, Ed Asner and so many others.

I don't live to hear the latest gossip, and I could give a rats ass less who wins what award.

I feel better now.....:D

I check out the award when I have a movie of interest. Despite 10 nominations, True Grit did not win any :( TANJ! Reminds me of Greg Mortenson and the Nobel Peace Price...bleh :boohoo

should've learned from you and give a rats ass about the award :D
