So is the "new" ASU the same as the dress blues with a regular tie and belted pants?
If I need to get a DA photo taken, there's no way they can tell I'm wearing the old dress blues, correct?

I think the only difference other that how you wear awards etc is the weight of the uniform.
The new blues will have more wool to polyester in them. Visually for a DA photo you should be fine.
I wish we (AF) got devices and other sorts of bling instead of ribbons for everything.
I look like an airline pilot in jump boots with a mexican general stack.

:D Thats too funny!
I joined the USAF Security Police (NG) after about a year in an Army Guard unit. Upon my first dress blues inspection I had my army salad on my blues. I think I had 10 ribbons the USAF guys had something like 3. I felt over dressed. I took the arrangement off. Then in walked the Police Chief. He was former Army. All of his awards except for about 4 were all Army. He motioned me over and asked where my ribbons were and I pulled them out of my pocket. He took them out of my hand and put them on my coat.
But to keep on topic, The USAF ribbons I received look odd with the Army ribbons I have.

Don't worry about it, no one expects Docs to have a squared away uniform. They'll just be happy you took a picture.

Ordinarily I'd agree :) .... but this doc is a former NCO, and I'd never hear the end of it if I screwed up a DA photo......

I used to have a team leader that was a former helicopter pilot. He used to say that flight suits and lab coats were designed to cover up the fact that some people can't wear a uniform.
I used to get my rip-stop shirts tailored into a pear-shaped configuration in order to fit more snugly.
