Four police officers in Detroit’s Northwestern District were shot this afternoon when a gunman came in and opened fire, the Free Press has learned.
According to Sgt. Todd Eby, the gunman walked in at about 4:20 p.m. with a pistol grip shotgun. Unprovoked, he just started shooting, said Eby, who was sitting at his desk when the gunfire erupted.
Eby said officers in the building returned fire, killing the man....

....Sunday's shooting capped off a bloody weekend that saw at least 10 people shot since Friday night — four at the precinct, three outside a strip club, and three murder victims found in a house in the 14000 block of Faircrest.
The shooting occurred at the 6th Precinct, just west of the Southfield Freeway and south of Interstate 96. Like most precincts in the city, there are no metal detectors in the entrance and visitors can come in and talk face-to-face with officers....

....The chief said the gunman has been identified but it was "too early to characterize" him Sunday evening while the investigation was ongoing.
The commander, who was shot in the back, was the most seriously wounded. Godbee said he underwent surgery Sunday evening and his prognosis was "very good." A sergeant and an officer who each suffered graze gunshot wounds to the head were both talking and alert, Godbee said.
A female sergeant also was treated and released after her bullet-resistant vest deflected a bullet to the chest, Godbee said.
Police also did not immediately release names of the wounded officers, saying families had not been notified in all cases....

What is it with all the shootings of policemen in the past couple of months? It's like the criminals have launched a war against cops.
Thank God none of the injuries today were fatal.
Prayers out to the four wounded officers and praying for their speedy and complete recovery.
To all my LE brothers, stay safe out there and watch your backs.

The Associated Press

DETROIT -- A 48-year-old man arrested following a shootout that killed his brother and a Detroit-area police officer has been charged with murder.
Terry N. Bowling was ordered jailed without bond Thursday following his arraignment on charges of felony murder, home invasion and resisting and obstructing an officer. He stood mute to the charges and a judge entered not guilty pleas on his behalf.
Bowling requested a court-appointed lawyer, but one had not been named as of Thursday afternoon.
David Bowling was fatally shot by police Monday after a break-in in Walled Lake. Police say Livonia Officer Larry Nehasil was killed trying to stop the brothers.
Terry Bowling's ex-wife Lisa Dunn was charged in federal court with possessing a gun stolen during a weekend robbery at a home in St. Clair Shores.

It is common knowledge amongst gangs that they out number cops 100/1.
Wait for the day when the gang leader drops a dime from prison and says, "take the city."

Actually 2010 stats show an increase of 40% in the number of overall officer deaths after a decline in the previous two years. The number of officers killed by gunfire rose by 20%
It seems the pattern is continuing this year.

Police Chief Identifies Detroit Precinct Shooter
by The Associated Press
January 24, 2011
A relative of the gunman who was fatally shot after wounding four officers at a Detroit police station was scheduled to be sentenced Monday in a double-homicide case, the city's police chief said.
Chief Ralph Godbee identified the shooter as 38-year-old Lamar D. Moore of Detroit, but said he couldn't speculate about a motive in Sunday's shooting at the 6th precinct.
"There's nothing in this that makes sense at all," Godbee told reporters during a briefing on the case.
Godbee didn't release specifics of the homicide case involving Moore's relative. He said the relative had been scheduled for sentencing Monday....

Police: Man kills 2 Florida officers in shootout
Posted 11m ago
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A man hiding in the attic of a home opened fire on law enforcement officers trying to arrest him Monday morning, sparking an intense firefight that left two police officers dead and a U.S. Marshal wounded, police said.
The suspect remained barricaded inside the house where the shooting happened, Police Chief Chuck Harmon said. He said more than 100 rounds were fired during the shootout.
"He was somebody we wanted to get off the streets, " Harmon said. "Who expects to walk into a house and get gunfire from the attic?"
....Monday's shooting is the latest in a string of shootings of police officers and comes four days after two Miami-Dade County detectives were killed by a murder suspect they were trying to arrest. That suspect was killed by another detective. Their funeral is Monday....

Suspect Sought in Shooting of Oregon Police Officer
Published January 24, 2011
Associated Press
LINCOLN CITY, Ore. -- Authorities are searching western Oregon for a man suspected of shooting a Lincoln City police officer during a traffic stop on a coastal highway, Oregon State Police said Monday.
The officer was shot more than once after he pulled over a car for speeding about 11 p.m. Sunday. The 45-year-old officer has been flown to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, about 150 miles northeast of Waldport, the site of the search....
Officers killed by gunfire peaked in the 1970's and is nearly double last years number. Soon there will be metal detectors located inside police stations/districts/precincts. Very lucky only the wacko was killed.

I blame the ROE that we (police) have to abide by. Not too much different from the constraints of ROE in other arena's, no? The media will blast an officer who made some poor decisions for weeks. Unfortunately, these hero's that fall far too soon are quick blips on the radars of the media, and in turn, the rest of the public.
People use to fear and respect the police. Not so much anymore.
People use[d] to fear and respect the police. In that order?
Good question. As I've only been on the job for 5 years, well after things started going down hill, I'm not the one to answer.
The way I see it and explain to people, only the wolves need to fear the sheepdog.
Police fear 'war on cops'

"A spate of shooting attacks on law enforcement officers has authorities concerned about a war on cops.
In just 24 hours, at least 11 officers were shot. The shootings included Sunday attacks at traffic stops in Indiana and Oregon, a Detroit police station shooting that wounded four officers, and a shootout at a Port Orchard, Wash., Wal-Mart that injured two deputies. On Monday morning, two officers were shot dead and a U.S. Marshal was wounded by a gunman in St. Petersburg, Fla............"

I'm not sure if there is anymore of a war on us now then there has been in the past several years. IIRC, the Detroit shooting was the only one that did not involve the arrest or attempted arrest of someone. IMO, I think the reason there are more shootings involving LEO's today is that there is less hesitation to shoot a police officer now due to a complete lack of respect for authority and life in general.
However, I have also seen an increase over the past several years of "ambushes" which were conducted specifically for the purposes of assaulting and killing LEO's. If what they are saying is true, then there will certainly be an increase of those types of activities in the near future.
Time to get serious in Detroit. ;)

Detroit Precinct Shooting: Possible Motive

DETROIT (WJBK)
....FOX 2 cameras were the only ones rolling as Detroit police kicked in a door and raided a house on Sorrento. With guns drawn, they searched the home belonging to 38-year-old Lamar Moore, who police say is the man who shot four police officers inside the Northwest District. They were looking for anything connected to crimes committed by Moore. We've been told they were also looking for weapons especially.
It's also where sources tell FOX 2 that Moore took a 13-year-old girl, a runaway he abducted. He allegedly raped her and held her prisoner for almost a week.
Sources say while he was away, she broke free Sunday around 2:00 p.m., ran to a house on Ward and dialed 911.
FOX 2 has learned what happened next may reveal a possible motive for the shooting rampage inside the Northwest District.
Responding to the claims of kidnapping and rape, police got a search warrant for the first time Sunday and entered Moore's home looking for evidence of his alleged crimes. Moore drove past and saw this. Within the next hour, he reportedly walked into the Northwest District and opened fire.
As for the teenager, we're told she first ran away at the end of December, but she is now home safe with her mother.
Moore was convicted several years ago for resisting police.
Neighbors said Moore grew up on Sorrento with his family and that he was a nice and family-oriented man. They are stunned by the accusations against him.
You know, I googled "policeman shot" and got over 3 million hits in a third of a second.

LAUSD police officer admitted fabricating shooting story, source says
January 27, 2011 | 9:55 pm
Authorities arrested Los Angeles school police Officer Jeff Stenroos on suspicion of filing a false police report after he allegedly admitted to fabricating a story that he had been shot last week in Woodland Hills, according to a senior LAPD official close to the investigation.
The official said investigators are still piecing together how Stenroos pulled off the alleged hoax, which sparked a dragnet that inconvenienced thousands of people after police shut down a large swath of Woodland Hills in search of the supposed gunman.
The source added that Stenroos' protective vest showed obvious signs of having been struck by a bullet, and the officer also suffered bruising on his chest. Detectives later raised questions about whether the officer shot himself accidentally and then fabricated a story or concocted the whole scenario.
