Elementary School Readers Vote U.S. Armed Forces as 2010 Person of the Year

Good news: your kids aren't as dumbed down by teen idols and electronic gadgets as you may have previously thought.

In a recent poll for Time for Kids, elementary school aged children voted the United States Armed Forces as the 2010 TFK Person of the Year.

The U.S. Armed Forces Person of The Year title represents the more than 1.4 million men and women who are on active duty in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard- so just about everyone knows someone who gets a piece of the title, which honors the most influential newsmaker of the year.

But in this celeb-saturated world, it may be even more surprising that the U.S. Armed Forces beat out big time names like teen idol Justin Bieber and Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg for the title.

With Bieber in the news on a daily basis about everything from his haircut to his girlfriend status and with everyone and their dog having a Facebook account, it's quite a feat that both of these men (kids?) were skipped over in favor of the men and women who serve our country. And it's really, really good.

Other nominees for the Person of the Year title included Hilary Clinton, Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay, both Barack and Michelle Obama and the Chilean miners.

And sure, the Biebster landed in second place in the Time for Kids poll, but so what? Our kids came through with a respectable choice in the end.

The pint-sized version of the Person of the Year title is modeled after Time Magazine's annual person of the year announcement. Mark Zuckerberg actually took the title in this year's adult version, joining a long list of presidents and dignitaries for that prestigious title.

Previous winners of the Time for Kids Person of the Year award have included "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, Barack Obama and -- back in his golden boy days -- pro golfer Tiger Woods.

In an age where children's role models are scarce, the Time for Kids poll is very telling. The only athlete nominees on the list were sports stars Halladay and Olympic champion skier Lindsay Vonn, while the squeaky clean -- and very blow-dried -- Bieber was the only pop star who made the nominations list.

As for role models in the entertainment field, that's usually a slippery slope. While "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus was nominated for the Time for Kids poll way back in her good girl days -- you know, like two years ago -- today nary a parent would find her to be a suitable role model for their children, let alone a contender for a Person of the Year title.

In the end, though, the kiddie Time readers took a reprieve from their Bieber fever and made a good call this time around. You should be proud.

That's outstanding. It gives one hope in the future generations. Kudos to the youngsters who picked our warriors as the "Person of the Year". :D
