Big Bear shot in the Saddle Hills Alberta, Sept 20/2010

These two fellows were calling elk in Saddle Hills south of Woking AB when this big guy slipped in on the caller.
The shooter spotted the bear 8 yards from the caller and dropped him with 5 shots out of his 338 Rem Mag..
Farmers in the area new about the Bear but weren’t able to track it. The Bear had killed 3 horses, 5 cows, 13 sheep and a pen full of chickens on several different homesteads in the area.
Fish and wildlife had bear traps set up in the area but notice on surveillance video that whenever he would start to enter the trap his hump would hit the top of the culvert trap slowing him enough that the trap door would wack him on the head before he was all the way in. Check out the scar tissue on his face…..
The Bear weighed in just under 1300 pounds and would have stood 11 ¾ feet tall on its hind legs…..

Good that he had a .338 Remington Magnum and not something smaller like an '06 or .270. Knowing that large bears might be in the area of their hunt may have led them to carry a larger caliber.

Oh, I don’t know, mm… with the right load, an ‘06 should do the trick…

That is a monster....good looking out, many times the shooter can't see the caller. Good thing that was not the case here!

Note to self: When calling wildlife, hungry bambi eaters will try something new.

The size of the paws in relation to the bear's size and weight seem off to me--I wonder if the bear had been sick for awhile since he'd been attacking livestock like that...Those paws should go on a much heavier bear.

Still it will make a magnificent rug.

Mature grizzly boars average about 700-800 pounds. 1300 pounds is big. Look at the picture of its body- No ribs or spine sticking out. It looks pretty healthy.

Greatly ups my respect for the old mountain men with their single shot slow loading front stuffers.
