Restraint: Recalibrating American Strategy (2010) by Patrick Cronin is a study produced by the Center for a New American Security and is available at:

A worthy read that focuses on the US needing a more pragmatic approach to foreign and defense policy based on contemporary constraints, not the least of which are financial, diplomatic and military. He describes two historic, US "impulses" developed in the 20th century, Global Enforcer and Global Savior, and how they have led the US into more protracted conflicts with little, apparent return. He discusses possible ways of dealing with contemporary threats such as Iran, North Korea, China and Afghanistan/Pakistan while restraining these two impluses yet without compromising our role in the world as a superpower.
