Hello. My question is about a foreign degree being translated into the American system. I hate to ask a question on here, as I know you have better things to do with your time than to answer my questions. I have searched these forums to try and find an answer and haven't been able to find anything that may help me. I have also asked a few trusted people locally, and have been getting varied answers.

Basically, my situation is as follows. I spent some time in an American High school, and due to some family issues, was transferred to a German school. I went on to graduate it with a 'Mittlere Reife" which I understand is an equivelant to High school diploma. I was just hoping that maybe someone here knows the specifics, as to how it is treated when moving back to the US and getting it translated. I wish to join the Army next year with hopefully an 18X, but I am questioning whether this will be sufficient.

Any advice or answers are greatly appreciated.

Max.

The first question is what kind of German School did you attend? Was it a Gymnasium, RealSchule etc....? How many years did you do school. The frau is German and she did Gymnasium 13 years and it was translated in Stuttgart as a H.S. Diploma.

Well, it was at a Hauptschule, something called M-Zweig.

Basically it's the same diploma you get for Realschule, but at a Hauptschule.

10 years of school total. One year at the German school, if that matters.

If you have the opportunity, the best thing to do is see an education counselor at a base near you. Usually they have a list of translators that can tell you what type of school equivalent you have. If not there are also online companies that will do this as well.

I may have some difficulty setting that up since my Sponsor decided to call it quits. I'll see what I can do.

Thank you for your help.

I know this is the SF Questions sections, but being from Germany I feel I have some special insight into the matter. Hope this is OK with the QPs.

Max,

call the Recruiting Station in Wiesbaden. You can find the number online. If he's still there, SFC Musson will sort you out.
