View Full Version : FNP-45 versus FN Five Seven?
I am looking at the FNP-45 Pistol, then I saw the FN Five SeveN pistol shooting the 5.7 round.
I shot 50 rounds through the Five Seven. I was impressed, though I am easily Impressed.
I did not shoot the FNP-45. But I like the functions and layout. I am a left handed shooter, but I want the gun to be able to be used by all family members.
I also enjoy shooting IDPA. The 5.7 has 1650 fps. Will that cut steel targets? The ranges I've shot at use a lot of steel. That and the fact if I use a 30 round magazine, I'll never have change Mags. Humm.
The FNP-45 will come with the red dot sight.

Don't worry about cost- Which would you prefer?
I'm interested in expert opinion. I'm buying one or the other.

The 5.7 is not IDPA legal. I don't own either so I'll let someone else address the rest.

If you have to have an FN pistol, I would go with the 45 over the 5.7 for a defense or competition pistol.
The 5.7 is basically a .22 Magnum. Not legal for any competition I am aware of, and the wounds are basically a .22. It will penetrate some body armor, if that is important to you. May not take steel targets down, nor will it make Major, IIRC.
Electronic sights look cool but need batteries. On a pistol, small batteries. You decide if you trust them to work when you need them to.
The HK P2000 has interchangable backstraps to better fit your hand. It is also abmidexterous, including the mag release.
An optimized competition gun will not be an optimal carry gun any more than a race horse will make a good plow horse. You have to decide which one is more important to you.
Shooting the ones you are considering is a good first step. Your call, hermano.

The main perks of the Five Seven to me is cartridge commonality with the P90, and AP ability. Neither one of those will probably apply to you. It has a very large grip, which may be uncomfortable for members of your family. You will have to train every person who might have to use it, and 5.7 ammo is pretty expensive. I have only shot the Five Seven, and for a home defense scenario it serves a limited role. It is very loud and over penetration is a major problem. As for the 45, I have no experience with. I don't know who all would be using it, but I for my family I've got a S&W J Frame in 38 Special. That's what has worked for me. One tip... take the entire family to the store, even if you can't test fire it.
Thank you all.
If the Five Seven is not IDPA legal, then I won't get it.
FNP-45 unless someone convinces me otherwise.
I'll suggest the Sig Sauer P250 2SUM.
If you are into IDPA matches. Don't forget revolvers. With a little practice the S&W 625 JM can be a great personal defense AND IDPA weapon.

Along this line, I love my S&W 327 TRR8. Eight rounds .357 Magnum chamfered for full moon clips. It also comes with top and bottom rails. That would give you a large, light shooting .38 Special for IDPA with optic capability out of the box as well as a weaponlight capable .357 Magnum with a large capacity. Fast reloads for both arenas.

Keep in mind that a red dot is also illegal for IDPA. If you want I can call IDPA HQ and get an answer if it is legal to have one on a gun but with the dot turned off for the match. It hasn't come up at any of our matches and I am not so sure that they have even addressed the issue yet as FN is the only company to offer a handgun that is red dot ready.

As stated by Dusty, the FNP-45 is big. It's up there with the MK23 on size, it's not something anyone aside from Andre the Giant could carry on a daily basis concealed if that's important to you. I have held one and it does feel good!
