This is pretty bad. My friend was telling me that in 2009 that there a lot of ethnic tensions and that some sort of war would break out. I didn't believe him because such things stay local and never really get out of hand.
I think these protests are the 1st step. The skinheads are really making this even worse by their rhetoric.

The ethnic tensions of Eastern Europe have been smoldering for a long time. When the great Czars formed the Russian State they encapsulated many many smaller ethnic groups. None of which wanted to be Russian.
Unlike other smaller regional areas, Russia was just to big to be happy. China has the same problem.

Back in the 70t's my neighbor was a 1st gen Russian emigrate. His family are staunch White Russian, served in the military under the last Czar, go way back.
His dad, KBG Colonel??, ended up on one of Joe Stalin's Lists and decided the USA offered better opportunities than the Eastern Stalag. They left in 48-49.
We had several comm's around a bottle of purified potato water. Some of which I still remember.
Think of it this way,, If people of NY City did not speak the same language as people of Texas or East LA or Minnesota or ...
Throw in a heap of strong conservative religious affinity...

The problem is that the Chechen youth living in Moscow or St.Petersburg don't like ethnic Russians and ethnic Russian youth don't like them. They form groups. The people of Caucaus descent gang up on some lone guy and the beat the crap out of him. It makes news and people are outraged. Then Russian youth, also with their group, decide to beat up someone that doesn't look like a Slav. It makes news and the Caucaus community is angry. This creates tensions as well as rumors. The cycle continues
With the advent of things like forums, people are radicalized to do these kinds of things. Then you have politicians take advantage of this. The thing is, these groups are small but they sure have a large presence.
