BMT, sir, thank you for the post.
Reminds me of an environmentally concious business organization here in Utah several years ago that tried to balance the needs of protecting the environment with the needs of business, growth, ranching, farming, and progress. The organization died from a lack of funding. Neither side of the debate wanted to donate funds to an organization that wasn't fully in their court.
Unfortunately, in its oversimplified form, being in the center often makes one fight a two front war.
The middle - never having to say no.
When it comes to politics here in Texas, the only things found in the middle of the road are white lines and dead Armadillos.

The middle - never having to say no.QP Pete--
We centrists say "no" all the time.
"I'd have to think about that a little bit."
"That idea has merit, however I am concerned about [x1, x2, x3,...]."
"Are you sure you're not confusing a matter of opinion for a matter of fact?"
"How exactly would you pay for this?"
"We tried that before and it didn't work. How would things be any different now?"
"This sounds like a great idea...tell me more."
And for emergency use only: "That's the stupidest [expletive] [expletive + gerund] [expletive] [expletive] thing I've heard today."
1. Prior to WWII, rarely did Democrats or Republicans interject opinion regarding national security, that was left to the War Dept. What was argued in congress/senate was highway construction, intrastructure, street paving, wages, insurance, education, etc. When it came to national security and fighting the enemy, we are simply Americans.
2. Stand for something or fall for anything.
3. Be either Hot or Cold, luke warm is unpleasant.
