Rumor Confirmed: Obama Traded Missile Shield for Russian Help With Iran That Never Appeared

In May 2009, rumors surfaced that President Obama was planning to leave several European countries exposed to Russian ambition if Russia would agree to help keep nukes out of Iran.

Rumors confirmed: according to the Wikileaks cables, Obama proposed a trade -- he would cancel the Polish missile shield if Russia would support sanctions for Iran.

The whistle blowing web site, publishing diplomatic cables and other documents via The New York Times, the Guardian (UK) and other media outlets, show that George Bush’s anti-missile shield plan to station 10 interceptor rockets in Poland not far from the Kaliningrad (Russia) border and a radar system in the Czech Republic was seen as an obstacle by Washington in getting tougher sanctions against Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
The diplomatic cables show that the US believes that Iran has already received missiles from North Korea which could threaten western Europe.

The missile shield was officially canceled in September 2009. Shortly thereafter President Obama met with President Medvedev who came out of the meeting conceding "in some cases, sanctions are inevitable."

A diplomatic victory for Obama? Not remotely. Less than a month later, Russia reversed itself and declared that "[t]hreats, sanctions and threats of pressure in the current situation, we are convinced, would be counterproductive." After the US and the EU imposed tough penalties on Iran in September of this year, Russia immediately condemned the sanctions regime and started finding ways to undermine it.

Obama sold out our allies to Russia for a bill of goods.

I don't know how they sleep at night....maybe it is why so many politicians are drunks. Politicians = No Conscience & No Moral Compass....they are whores.

Reminds me of what was it I used to hear.....

I thought we had a relationship? So my price was only as good until the next guy walked in the door? Answer: You know the first lair doesn't have a chance, and your price is only good until John walks in tomorrow with an extra 5...You should have been the last guy in the door Dan!

Obama displayed a pretty backwards way of thinking here...

The Polish defense plan was put in place in reaction to Iran having BM-25 Musudan modified intermediate distance missile launchers which were obtained from North Korea. If Iran were able to go Nuclear, Berlin would be the largest Western European target in range. If Russia were able to control Iran, this would eliminate the need for a further arms build up in the region/arms race in the region.

From his point of view, this is crystal clear.

From a rational human beings thought process, the possibility of an Iranian missile--bio, chem, nuke--hitting a populated area is unacceptable, no matter what.

Interestingly, NPR ran a bit this morning stating that cables showed a diplomatic success with Russia; there was enough political pressure from the US and others for Russia to cancel the sale of anti-air missles to Iran that were planned to protect Iran's nuke facilities.

Makes me wonder if one of the other countries provided ... compensation.. for Russia's lost revenue.

IIRC there was much more to it than that and part of our final decision was - for the time being - to defer emplacing static defense systems in Eastern Europe and go with better mobile systems we maintain further to the south and closer to SWA.

Poland, on the other hand, is still upset over it all as they saw it as a diplomatic sleight as well as a foreseeable loss of projected $$$.

Whether purposeful or not, the timing of the announcement of canceling the Missile Shield on the 70th anniversary (to the day) of the Soviet invasion didn’t help matters either - what was he thinking :(

Then add that Poland's President was killed in a jet crash to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Russian massacre of Polish prisoners of war in the village of Katyn.

It has been a bad couple years for Poland.

That's what happens when you have no natural defenses and aggressive neighbors.
