My cousins invited me back down this year for deer season, it is always fun but this year some of my season sound more like hillbilly folklore....I don't know why I waste the gas to making open day because every deer I have taken has been on in the morning on the final Saturday of rifle season.
Opening day - I don't like my spot, I climb down by 9 and walk around. That evening I am out with my cousin looking over an area where he shot a doe that morning. I see something that looks like a large house cat. I throw the scope up, zoom in and discover it is a coyote. I ponder whether to shoot it and decide if I do it, it will likely be more humane if I shoot it than if my cousin sees it. I put the cross hairs between his eyes and send one down range and the yote disappears. Then I hear behind me "what in the hell are you shooting at'. A coyote I said. My cousin said, I didn't see it and I replied that is why I shot it. We go looking for the yote and my cousins finds it 200 yds or so away. My cousin asked me were I was aiming....between the eyes, where did I hit him.....between the eyes.
Day 2 - I hit the ridge early and moved my tree stand closer to an area I found a fresh scape the day before and get up the tree before dawn. It is windy and I am freezing my ass off. I stick it out and things start warming up and the woods start coming alive. I hear leaves rustling all around and some branches cracking in the surrounding briers, but I see nothing. Around 9:30-9:45 I am scanning the area and see something moving to my right. A closer glance it looks like a deer head and 100 to 130 yds away. I scope it and sure enough it is a nice buck nibbling at a tree branch that just do happens to be within 10-20 ft of were I shot a spike last year. I put the scope back up and look, I can see the body but there is thick brush in the way. I move my way up and find an opening....a V-Shape between two trees that cross each other and the on shot I have is mostly the head. I wait till the buck stretches head back up towards the leaves and squeeze the trigger. KaBoom! and then a delayed report on the receiving end. Through the scope I can see white belly, feet kicking and a ass end and head that are trying to get back up. Then it stops! Just as I am starting down the tree to see my buck I see some thing brown walk off....damn, there must have been two deer. I get down, walk over and find the spot, you can see where the head and legs were flaying, but the Buck was GONE! No blood, no hair, no nothing.....best we can figure I hit an antler and dazed him. And the razing....you can hit a coyote between the eyes at 200 yards, but you can't hit a buck....I dunno about you. I head home no deer but I got a nice shot on my first coyote.
That ate on me the remainder of the weekend and all last week.
Day 3 - Then I decided to give it another try Friday. I went down put my stand up in a different tree. I was up in the tree by 6:10 and waited. About 8:45 I heard some noise and noticed some movement down the holler, then I see 7 deer skirting me and all of a sudden I see a orange hat and vest and start shaking my head in disbelief and thinking you have got to be shitting me.....so much for getting a deer. This person walks right under my stand and after about a minute I say 'How ya doing' and 'Do you have permission to hunt here' which I know he doesn't. We chat for about 10 minutes and he leaves. I look at my watch and it is about 9:00 and I mentally determine I am heading down by 10:00 because of people tromping through he woods. Around 9:35 I see movement back down the holler, then I see several deer coming across and back up the holler. They stop at the trail for a moment, then 2 cross, then a couple more, then 3 more and finally a big doe. They are walking between a briar patch and a brush pile. I scope the doe, aim midway just behind the front shoulder follow her to a opening in the brush, squeeze the trigger, she drops and deer go everywhere. Two fawns are running around behind my stand and I toy with the idea of getting one of them but decide not to. I Climb down and walk over to where I shot the Doe and find a FAWN! HOW IN THE HELL...I am scratching my head in disbelief.......then I see a wide blood trial that leads to where I am standing but seems a bit too much for a small fawn......or is it away from where I am standing. I follow it and find the Doe. Apparently the Fawn was hugging the side of the Doe and one of them ran a bit after they were hit......1 shot, 2 Kills, 1 shot, Tagged Out...it is unbelieveable....it was dumb luck, but it makes up for the lost buck:D
