US to spend $200 mn a day on Obama's Mumbai visit

Press Trust of India, Updated: November 02, 2010 21:07 IST

Mumbai: The US would be spending a whopping $200 million (Rs. 900 crore approx) per day on President Barack Obama's visit to the city.

"The huge amount of around $200 million would be spent on security, stay and other aspects of the Presidential visit," a top official of the Maharashtra Government privy to the arrangements for the high-profile visit said.

About 3,000 people including Secret Service agents, US government officials and journalists would accompany the President. Several officials from the White House and US security agencies are already here for the past one week with helicopters, a ship and high-end security instruments.

"Except for personnel providing immediate security to the President, the US officials may not be allowed to carry weapons. The state police is competent to take care of the security measures and they would be piloting the Presidential convoy," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Navy and Air Force has been asked by the state government to intensify patrolling along the Mumbai coastline and its airspace during Obama's stay. The city's airspace will be closed half-an-hour before the President's arrival for all aircraft barring those carrying the US delegation.

The personnel from SRPF, Force One, besides the NSG contingent stationed here would be roped in for the President's security, the official said.

The area from Hotel Taj, where Obama and his wife Michelle would stay, to Shikra helipad in Colaba would be cordoned off completely during the movement of the President.

Better have a good Plan B. I do not want to see Joe Biden as POTUS.

Is it me, or is that a lot of semi-specific details for a short press release? What is the purpose of saying where exactly the POTUS is staying, specifically how many will be guarding him and who will/won't be armed? I know it's not getting into the nitty-gritty (Obama will be in Room XXX of the Hotel Taj ...), but it still seems a little too much to be putting out.

NDTV (New Delhi Television Limited)..

I think we may be dealing with the Bollywood version of USAToday merged into The Huffington Post, with a healthy dash of The National Enquirer..

The story is not important,, it's how you tell it,, that's circulation... ;)

From the Left Coast it seems Nancy Pelosi has been president for some time now...

Seriously though while the security of the POTUS is no laughing matter, could you make the argument given Mr. Obama's foreign policy he needs more security in the capitals of our allies then our adversaries, with the exception of Iran?

The Indians seem sikh of him already....

3000 people on this entourage? I missed the press conference, did anyone question the President about this? I mean, if true...the trip is 10 days at 200M, do the math.

And no, I don't want anything to happen to the President.

I assume that is their way of saying "roped off" as in "separated."

Unless we are going to have a massive fast rope into India.

34 warships sent from US for Obama visit

http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/34-warships-sent-from-us-for-obama-visit-64459

34 ships?

"........He will also be protected by a fleet of 34 warships, including an aircraft carrier, which will patrol the sea lanes off the Mumbai coast during his two-day stay there beginning Saturday. The measure has been taken as Mumbai attack in 2008 took place from the sea.........."

Must be a typo, should have been 3 or 4.

A number quoted by some state level official in India to the Indian media is most likely pure BS.

I wouldn't be surprised if extra security measures were taken, but the $200 million number seems like pure lies. How would a state level official have accounting data on what it's going to cost for the trip of the President of the United States? Why would all the security measures and numbers be displayed in the media for everyone to digest?

How are 34 warships going to do anything to protect the President in one of the largest urban areas in the world? Fight a war at sea or land Marines somehwere, sure, protect the President? I think not.

Bad information seems to keep getting quoted over and over again in the media- it sure must have raised the profile of that politician from the State of Maharashtra. IMHO, would completely ignore this report.

Now, if the President can only use some of his skills to sell 125 fighter jets worth billions of dollars....we're in the running for selling either F-18/F-16s, have already inked deals for C130s, and C17s.

What You Missed: Tuesday Talk on the President’s Trip to Asia

This week we sat down with Jeff Bader, Senior Director for Asian Affairs, and Ben Rhodes, Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications, to talk about the President’s upcoming trip to India, Indonesia, South Korea and Japan. On WhiteHouse.gov and Facebook, you asked questions on a range of topics from outsourcing jobs to “hot button” issues surrounding China to the President’s plans for Diwali in India. Watch their responses by using the links below to jump directly to the questions that you're interested in or watch the full video of the chat. In other words snopes is saying "I don't know but I'll believe the White House - which ain't saying how much it costs."

But what is "Cost"? How do you add cost? Not saying the following is fact - just using it as a small scale example. If you want to go for a high figure you would include the base pay and TDY costs of the military folks. Middle road you would just use the TDY costs. Low ball you would not include any military related fees - after all they would still be paid if they sat at home. Might as well be working to earn it.

I do know one thing - renting 570 rooms in a top of the line hotel and flying 34 aircraft around the world costs more than a few dollars.

Richard
11-05-2010, 10:54
Actually, I believe the point being made is nobody knows the actual costs but they are certain to be high.
