Wow...I wonder how many children’s births, holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, or family functions Mr. Moran has missed due to his "service". I get angry every time a politician says they are serving this nation...and this assclown has the nerve to denigrate military service as not being public service....in my opinion service requires sacrifice not the ability to vote oneself a pay raise ...Mr. Moran you should be ashamed of yourself…you didn’t misspeak you spoke your mind and we know exactly what you meant....maybe you should take a trip to Arlington or Walter Reed and see what service and sacrifice actually looks like....

Twenty-four years in the military doesn't count as public service, at least according to Virginia Democratic Congressman Jim Moran.

In a video that's gone viral online, Moran is heard telling a Democratic gathering earlier this month that his opponent, Republican Patrick Murray, is just another unqualified GOP candidate.

"What [Republicans] do is find candidates, usually stealth candidates, that haven't been in office, haven't served or performed in any kind of public service," Moran said. "My opponent is typical, frankly."

The trouble is, Murray is a retired Army colonel with 24 years of service--including combat in Iraq. The idea that such an extensive military record doesn't qualify as "public service" has left a sour taste in Murray's mouth.

"It is unconscionable to me how a member of Congress from a District with so many Veterans, who also sits on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, could make such shameful and offensive comments about the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform," Murray wrote on his campaign blog [1] Friday."This kind of disrespect to our service members not only offends me, but is insensitive to the sacrifices made by our dedicated military families as well."

Moran responded Friday, telling local news outlet WJLA that he simply misspoke, and his constituents know that's not what he meant. The Murray campaign points out that the congressman had the same sort of explaining to do earlier this month, when he claimed an endorsement from the Disabled American Veterans Association and a high rating from the Military Officer's Association. The latter organization reportedly [2] asked Moran to cease using its name in support of his campaign efforts.

The military community is not known for making political rebuffs; it was relatively quiet when Connecticut Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal [3] (D) was revealed to have exaggerated his service in Vietnam [4]. But in a district that is home to hundreds of military families from surrounding bases--and the Pentagon--Moran's remarks may evince a rebuttal in a form much sharper than words on Election Day: votes.

Murray trails Moran by 13 points, according to a recent Murray internal poll.

"Moran responded Friday, telling local news outlet WJLA that he simply misspoke"

What does he mean by misspoke? I misspoke in a bar one time when I might have been just slightly underage and left some blood there, I almost left some teeth. But I only needed 4 stiches. :D

Maybe Mr. Moran needs a lesson on 2 Nov.

Typical Dem response anytime they are caught with their pants around their ankles, "Oh I didn't mean what I said, I simply mispoke." They think Americans are stupid. Hopefully, we will show them we are not.

I really don't think Democrats or Republicans are one our "team." However, I must say that Republicans almost never say anything this stupid when it comes to the military. Democrats always wonder why they have to "prove that they love America," this is one of the main reasons.

"Do good in school boys and girls, or you might end up in the military" Oh I meant, that, uhhhhh, ummmm...

The article misspelled the guy's name. It's Moron.

Gypsy beat me to it. He should definitely invest the $125 to have his name changed to "Moron".

Its a good thing I hold our elected leaders in a position of such high respect or else I would invite Mr Moran to enjoy a session of vigorous intercourse...

Billy-

I always enjoy your brutally honest and sarcastic commentaries. This was one helped me decorate my screen and keyboard. Thanks for the laugh - I am violently nodding my head in agreement with your sentiment.

I live in Moran's district. His error in speech, mis-statment, or mumbling points to something I have long believed: Military service counts for little in politics. If military service influenced the voters then John McCain would have been nominated and elected president in 2000, rather than the former ANG 1LT. Few of our elected reps have military service; it's just lawyer after lawyer after lawyer. (I would be happy if more of them held degrees in a really useful subject like economics.)

Neither the Dems nor the Repubs truly respect military service.

In 1984 I knew a guy who had been a minor functionary in the Reagan White House, but sufficiently high that the Navy offered him a Reserve commission as a lieutenant commander, though he lacked professional qualifications to be a direct appointment O-4. He consulted his pollsters who determined that among Maryland voters (his home state) having a navy reserve commission offered him no benefit. The fact that he openly told me this, knowing my background, demonstrated how ingrained his attitude was. When he later offered me a job in a political campaign I declined the offer.

Perhaps the present generation of Iraq and Afghanistan vets will make a difference in the political future, though, unless the present structure of political parties change, and the attitude of the voting public, I don't see how that will happen.

I'm not going to be holding my breath. I am constantly amazed at the disconnect between those with service and those without. My gut says comparatively low numbers of those with service combined with a false sense of understanding by those without will lead to low overall impact. I sit on the divide and see it every day. I readily concede that my American political history is a bit weak, otherwise I would draw on an historical parallel to better make my point. Maybe someone here has looked at this more seriously?

Yep, we only did it due to our genetic need to embrace the suck! We made too much money, spent too much time at home, had too many friends die of old age, and still have a hard time inducing arthritis in our underused joints. We certainly weren't shot at enough, didn't get malaria hardly ever, and had the lowest divorce rate in history. No grieving widows and children were given medals as a consolation prize, no one lost limbs, and no one was ever traumatized by anything horrific. Yeah, it was just a cake walk.

Now going to Congress, working three days a week, six months a year, getting cash slapped in your hands for favors, being serviced by interns, and having your feet bumped under the stall - NOW THAT'S PUBLIC SERVICE! [/rant][/sarcasm]

Moron explains what he meant by "mispoke" -

Moran said his comments have been distorted and what he criticized was not his opponent's military record but his lack of civic involvement.

"Serving in the military does not prevent you from getting involved in the community," he said. "Mr. Murray has decided simply not to be involved in the civic life of the community. That's what I was saying."

Apparently, Mr. Murray should have spent less time defending the community, and more time at PTA meetings.

We should all show Mr Moran some sympathy since it is clear that his ass is planted firmly on his shoulders...

...sympathy, by the way, can be found in the dictionary between "shit" and "syphilis" in case you want to look for it yourself sir.

Speaking to Arab television network Alhurra, Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) said Republicans made big gains in November in part because “a lot of people in this country … don’t want to be governed by an African-American.”

This guy is a total (excuse this please) moron. As a Conservative I have no issues being governed by anyone elected to the higher office as long as they are NOT stupid. We have major race issues in this country because of STUPID comments like this.
