WASHINGTON -- Someone fired shots at the Pentagon early Tuesday, hitting the building and causing minor damage, defense officials said.
Police who protect the massive Defense Department headquarters temporarily locked down some road and pedestrian entrances to the building after a civilian reported he may have heard shots at about 5 a.m. on the south side of the facility.
A sweep of the area and facility found that some shots had hit the building, Marine Col. Dave Lapan, a Pentagon spokesman said. He didn't know how many or from what kind of weapon.
Roads and pedestrian entrances leading to the Pentagon were reopened a little after 5:30 a.m. but part of nearby highway 395 was later temporarily closed for part of the investigation.
A dozen police also were seen at around 9 a.m. walking side-by-side in a line as they combed through a grassy area on the south side of the building.
Lapan said there were no injuries. In response to a question, he said he did not know whether there was any connection between Tuesday's incident and Monday's discovery of bullet holes in windows at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va., some 30 miles south of the Pentagon.
A cleaning crew at the museum associated with the Quantico Marine Base called police when they noticed the bullet holes in windows high up in a part of the building that faces Interstate 95.
Police believe the shots were fired at the museum late Saturday or early Sunday, when no one was inside. Investigators used a crane to inspect the damage Monday. Because of the height of the holes, police suspect the bullets were likely fired from a rifle, but they are still working to determine what caliber of bullet was used.
Several glass panels were hit, causing about $20,000 in damage. None of the museum's artifacts - including a harrier jet hanging near the damaged windows - were hit.
Lapan said this was the first incident of its kind since early March, when a gunman opened fire at a security checkpoint into the Pentagon in a point-blank attack that wounded two police officers.
The shooter, identified as John Patrick Bedell, 36, of Hollister, Calif., was shot by police and died hours after being admitted to a hospital in critical condition. Authorities had no motive for the shooting, but there had been signs that Bedell may have harbored resentment for the military and had doubts about the facts behind the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Maybe that's why the E-ring is on the outer edge of the building. :D

FBI Opens Investigation Into Three Shootings in Northern Virginia

"....Investigative evidence has confirmed that shots fired at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Virginia, and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, involved a single weapon. Ballistics testing is underway for an overnight shooting that took place on October 25 or October 26 at the Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Chantilly, Virginia.........."
Same weapon. Hmmmmm.
This case looks like it could zig-zag anywhere. The field of suspects can be wide open.
But Military targets? Somehow Bubba the Beer dinkin' redneck don't spring to mind. Disgruntaled anti government type? Yes. Islamic related? Yes. Earthfirster/Save the Whales type? Yes. But please don't let it be Bubba. Bubba might have done it once, maybe twice on a "Hey, watch this" but not three times.
Shots Fired at Marine Corps National Museum
DEVELOPING: More shots were fired overnight at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va., according to Prince William County Police.
The shooting incident apparently occurred just hours after the FBI linked Tuesday night's shooting at a Marine recruiting center in Chantilly, Va., with two similar cases in the commonwealth -- including an earlier incident at the museum.
Staff came into work Friday morning and found new bullet holes, a public information officer at the museum told Fox News.
No artifacts were damaged and no one was hurt, the officer said
Prince William County Police Department and the Quantico Marine Corps base military police and the FBI are investigating the incident.
The museum will be closed at least until 1:00PM ET.

Fourth shooting in Virginia targeting military facilities prompts FBI public appeal
An FBI official urges the shooter, possibly a disgruntled Marine, to contact authorities. The National Museum of the Marine Corps was the target of a shooting Thursday.

Reporting from Washington
After a fourth shooting incident Thursday night involving military buildings in Northern Virginia, the FBI appealed to the public for help in locating a possibly disgruntled Marine before something "disastrous" happens.
Authorities announced on Friday that they believe the shooter who fired on the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va. Thursday night may also be responsible for three other shootings targeting government buildings in recent weeks.
John Perren, acting assistant director of the FBI Washington field office, said investigators believe the shooter may be a current or former U.S. Marine with a grievance with the Corps. During a press conference outside FBI offices in downtown Washington, Perren urged the shooter to contact authorities....
(fm Pete) But please don't let it be Bubba. Bubba might have done it once, maybe twice on a "Hey, watch this" but not three times.
Agree. It's not Bubba's style. It wouldn't have taken Bubba three tries. I think it's a disgruntled window washer.

The same FBI who said the DC Sniper was probably a White Male in his late twenties. The same FBI who has literally gotten away with murder.

Damn windows, always lookin' back at you funny ...
As much as it pains me. IMO, the FBI is close on this one. More like someone disgruntle against the Military as a whole. Marine Museum has a lot of cover around it. Maybe not a Marine target but just Military Target. Pentagon would be easy also.

Holly,
I think we need more "disgruntled Marines" in the MSM. They have a quaint way of policing their own, and I don't think they'd let random speculation like that last for long.

Like that would narrow it down any ...

FBI: Gunfire at Virginia recruiting center linked to other incidents
By the CNN Wire Staff
November 4, 2010 2:24 p.m. EDT
Washington (CNN) -- Ballistic tests have linked a shooting at a Coast Guard recruiting office in Virginia to four other shootings at military facilities last month, the FBI said Wednesday.
FBI spokesman Andrew Ames provided no other immediate details.
The latest incident was reported Tuesday morning after a bullet struck the recruiting office, housed in a Woodbridge strip mall.
The description was "relatively similar" to October cases in which shots were fired at the Pentagon, the National Museum of the Marine Corps and a vacant Marine recruiting station, said 1st Sgt. Kim Chinn, spokeswoman for Prince William County police.
"Employees of the Coast Guard recruiting station called to tell us there was some damage to the glass, and police arrived and determined it was probably done by a bullet," Chinn said.
No one has been injured in any of the incidents, including when six shots were fired at the Pentagon early on October 19.
Ballistics tests connected the Pentagon gunfire to shots aimed at the Marine museum on October 17 and 29, as well as to an October 25 case in which shots were fired at a Marine Corps recruiting station in Chantilly, near Washington Dulles International Airport.
Chinn would not say how many bullets were found at the scene Tuesday. The Coast Guard referred questions to the FBI, saying it is taking the lead in the investigation.
The Pentagon Force Protection Agency declined comment on the shooting.
