And yes, the point of this little quiz is that religion is more complicated than it sometimes seems, and that we should be wary of rushing to inflammatory conclusions about any faith, especially based on cherry-picking texts. The most crucial element is perhaps not what is in our scriptures, but what is in our hearts.

It is very complicated for the New York Times, considering they don't understand the dispensational context of certain religions.

In this day and age, how many Christian or Hindu suicide bombers call out the Hindu or Christian equivalent of "Allahu Akbar" while perpetrating their heinous acts?

Islamic terrorists unequivocally invoke Islam as the basis for their actions and unlike all other religions, Islam is unique in having a developed doctrine, theology, and legal system (Sharia) that mandates warfare against the Kafiroon.

The Objectives of Jihad

o9.0
(O: Jihad means to war against non-Muslims, and is etymologically derived from the word mujahada, signifying warfare to establish the religion.

o9.1 Jihad is a communal obligation (def: c3.2). When enough people perform it to successfully accomplish it, it is no longer obligatory upon others.

o9.6 It is offensive to conduct a military expedition against hostile non-Muslims without the Caliph’s permission (A: though if there is no Caliph (def: o25), no permission is required.
(The Reliance of the Traveler. Pgs 599-609)

Verses in the Qur’an that call for no compulsion, peace, love, and tolerance towards the Kafiroon have been abrogated (al-Nasikh wal-Mansoukh)

"None of Our revelations do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, but We substitute something better or similar: Knowest thou not that Allah Hath power over all things?" (Sura 2: 106)

"When We substitute one revelation for another, and Allah knows best what He reveals (in stages), they say, "Thou art but a forger": but most of them understand not." (Sura 16:101)

o22.1 ( I )
(9) those (nasikh) which supersede previously revealed Koranic verses;
(10) and those (mansukh) which are superseded by later verses.
(The Reliance of the Traveler. Pgs 625, 626)

The Qur’an & Hadith guarantee martyrs a fast track to Islamic paradise to have their sins forgiven if they die in Jihad for the cause of Allah:

God has purchased the persons and possessions of the believers for the Garden—they fight [q-t-l] in God’s way: they kill [q-t-l] and are killed [q-t-l]—this is a true promise given by Him .... Who could be more faithful to his promise than God? So be happy with the bargain you have made: that is the supreme triumph.(Sura 9:111)

You who believe, shall I show you a bargain that will save you from painful punishment? 11 Have faith in God and His Messenger and struggle [j-h-d] for His cause with your possessions and your persons—that is better for you, if only you knew—12 and He will forgive your sins, admit you into Gardens graced with flowing streams, into pleasant dwellings in the Gardens of Eternity. That is the supreme triumph (Sura 61:10-12)

When asked, average American Muslims will tell you what Sharia is....it's the "Muslims Law"....the "Constitution"...anything you do in life you have to go by Sharia:

a. Islam
b. Christianity
c. Hinduism

Ahh but the muslims certainly have perfected the technique.

The worlds major religions have reformed and adapted to modern times with the exception of Islam. Stop being an apologist Richard.

Could you elaborate on this please?

T-Rock,

Historically the " get into heaven for killing the infidel " card hasn't been a monopoly to one particular faith. However, if we feel there is greater relevance to current events, extremists invoking fundamentalist justification and selective scripture interpretations to justify nefarious acts remains in vogue. Other than morally reprehensible I don't know what to label the followers of the Westboro Baptist Church. Despite the pain they cause Gold Star families, AFAIK they have not committed acts of violence and thus probably don't qualify as terrorists despite their use of coercion for political ends. They seem quite willing to justify their "heinous actions" with their interpretations of faith. Abortion clinic bombers such as the infamous Eric Rudolph, certainly qualify as terrorists, he is on record identifying himself as Roman Catholic. Even more current are those Huttaree Militia members indicted earlier this year plotting to kill Michigan LEO with IED's. To cite a few excerpts from the enclosed article,

The group, Hutaree, consists of several members in several states, Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. The members were planning to kill a police officer, and then when other officers attended the funeral, they planned to detonate IED devices to kill police officers in attendance of the service. FBI officials stated that the attacks were being planned by the group to occur some time in April. IEDs (improvised explosive devices) are considered weapons of mass destruction, and are frequently used by al-Qaeda and other Islamic terrorist groups.

According to the Hutaree website, the word Hutaree means “Christian Warrior,” though no such term appears to exist in any standard dictionary.

Eight of the nine members of the group were arrested over the weekend, with the last member’s arrest expected soon...

... The dogma of the group Hutaree states that they are warriors which are training to fight the antichrist and the followers of the antichrist. According to BBC News, the website of the group says that they are “preparing for the end time battles to keep the testimony of Jesus Christ alive.” The website also contains video of military-style training.

You mentioned Hindus, members of the Hindu militant Bajrang Gal organization were arrested by Indian authorities in 2008 for attacks on both churches and Muslims. The word Bajrang refers to a Hindu deity "Hanuman", however there was nothing divine about their heinous acts, except perhaps justification in their own minds.

These people are simply dirtballs, criminals, and wolves. I attended Catholic school from kindergarten through high school, obviously the above domestic examples have nothing in common with the Christian beliefs most Americans including myself were taught, yet they call themselves Christians. Extremists invoking faith as justification for heinous acts unfortunately seems universally common.

Could you elaborate on this please?

Biblical = Covenants, dispensed to whom, and for what reason - timeframe.

Islamic = al-Nasikh wal-Mansoukh (Meccan vs the Madinan way), Muhammads dispensation to Islamic followers - timeframe.

What prescriptive New Testament doctrine does Christ put forth that commands Fred Phelps, Eric Rudolph, or the Hutaree militia to go out and do violence on Christ's behalf?

What prescriptive Islamic doctrine does Muhammad put forth that commands UBL, Anwar al-Awlaki, or Hamas to go out and do violence on Muhammad's behalf?

How are Islamic terrorists violating the tenets of their faith?

How are Christian terrorists violating the tenets of their faith?

Does Muhammad put forth legal imperatives to go out and perform violence on behalf of Islam ?

Does Christ put forth legal imperatives to go out and perform violence on behalf of Christianity ?

ETA

Anyone can twist religion to justify violence, however, Islam requires no twisting whatsoever - Sharia Law, in accordance with the Qur'an, demands violence no matter how one equivocates :munchin

Was the law of Moses abolished when Christ fulfilled it?

The book of Deuteronomy 22:21

“He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her”

"O ye who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allah is with those who keep their duty (unto Him)."
~Muhammad~

“Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men”
~Christ~

Penn,

The first two links provided show Victoria's Secret models, after watching them it reinforced my conviction there is a god, however I didn't initially think these were the links you intended, since I didn't notice Dylan in the background for some time. :lifter

my intention…an artistic response to propaganda, tribal myth, oppressive beliefs systems and the chance to comment on few of my obsessions: VS, True Angles, and Clemens, by one of America’s great social commentators, Dylan.; imho, only Samuels Clemens was equally irreverent. Both Dylan and Clemens observations included the derogation of law and commercialization of religion.

If you haven’t read his “War Prayer", take the time to do so. You will discover an uncanny resemblance of distain. Clemens comment on the manipulation of patriotism mixed with equal parts of religious fervor, capitalism and myth making is exampled in the following few lines, it is further reduced by Dylan in the subsequent quote, the line resonates the same thematic relationship:

For Clemens:
In a sordid slime harmonious Greed was born in yonder ditch,
With a longing in his bosom and for others' goods an itch
As Christ died to make men holy, let men die to make us rich
Our god is marching on.

Dylan: “pink plastic Jesus’ that glow in the dark”

Jokerman, wow, only Jorge Luis Borges’s “Everything and Nothing” is as much fun.
