A gunman wounded two people before being shot dead after he opened fire at a convenience store on the Fort Bliss Army base in El Paso, Texas, officials said.

The shooting, inside the "Shopette" store, was reported at about 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, Col. Joseph A. Simonelli Jr. said at a press conference. The area was roped off for an FBI investigation

Law enforcement arrived on scene and killed the person they believed to be the shooter, officials said.

Details about the identities of the victims and of the shooter remain unclear.

FORT BLISS -- A man who shot and wounded two women at a Fort Bliss convenience store this afternoon was killed by military police responding to the scene, officials said.
Post officials had little to say about the shooting, which was reported about 3 p.m. And Beaumont Army Medical Center personnel referred questions about conditions of the victims to the FBI, which was investigating the shooting. The FBI did not return calls.

"At no point was the post put on lockdown," said Col. Joseph Simonelli, the post's garrison commander, during an afternoon news conference. "We did direct traffic around the shopette area."

Simonelli, the post's garrison commander, in an afternoon press conference provided only the most basic details, even declining to identify genders of those involved and whether they were civilian or military. Simonelli also would not say which shopette was involved. It was later identified as the gas station at the intersection of Cassidy and Pershing. Other officials verified the genders of those involved.
Military police responded to the scene within three minutes of the report that shots had been fired, he said, and the area was blocked off. An e-mail message was sent warning soldiers and civilian employees to stay away from the shopette.

Mayor John Cook said post officials told him the victims, both of whom were shot in the head, were employees of the government-operated convenience store. In general, those employees are not military....

"............The FBI issued a Tuesday statement identifying the gunman as 63-year-old Steven Kropf of El Paso. Authorities say they don't know if Kropf had any relationship with either victim. But they called Monday's shooting an isolated incident.............."

Shooter was a retired CSM.

Victim 1 - GSW to the head x2 and neck (dead in the ER)
Victim 2 - Still in ICU, can't give out additional info due to patient privacy stuff.

Response time from the MP substation 2 blocks up the street was 3min 52.

Shoppette is the main shoppette / gas station on post (Cassidy road) which is always PACKED at 3 in the afternoon. Why no one (soldier wise) took him down prior to law enforcement getting there I have no idea.

Reports have the SGM walking in, drawing the weapon, firing his shots immediately. Very matter of fact.

Still lots of speculation.

This is the second "active shooter" scenario we have had in 18 months on Bliss. The last was a murder suicide at the Px.

Tomorrow morning the post CG is coming to Beaumont (the hospital) to give 22 members of the Beaumont staff "commendations for their part in the active shooter response"...including people from Patient Administration, Nursing Education, Readiness, ER, Nursing, Neurology, ICU, Respiratory Care, and Surgery.

Other than the medical team that actually worked on the patients when they came to the ED...W T F? And even then...what makes these two GSW victims any different from any other shooting victim that we treat? There was no "active shooter ANYTHING other than "victim" at WBAMC. We were a good 3-5 MILES away and simply received the patients.

Honestly...patient administration? Nursing ed? Readiness division? (those folks handle deployments in the hospital):confused:
